This my favorite book of all time! I've read it at least a half dozen times. Personal fave characters were Tom Cullen and Harold Lauder, but there really isn't a weak character in it.

For those that mentioned Swan Song, I just read that for the first time a couple of months ago. It's easy to see the influence of The Stand on it, from the apocalyptic setting to the supernatural, shape-shifting main villain. It was good, not great. Funny, though, I actually read up a bit on it, and it seems McCammon has made statements showing frustration that it was perceived as a Stand copycat.

I actually liked Swan Song better, if you can believe that. I'm not sure I can articulate why, maybe I just felt there were more memorable scenarios playing out in it. I still enjoy The Stand; it's a great read, just not in my top 5.

I have just finished today! It seems to have taken me ages to finish but I got there!

I Loved it! :D All of the characters were great and I felt like I knew them all by the end. My favourite without a doubt was Tom Cullen.

I will miss it now I've finished!
M-o-o-n - that spells "done"!

If you like The Stand you might also try Robert McCammon's "Swan Song" and Brian Hodge's "Dark Advent." Both are pretty good books with similar themes.

Swan Song, while similar in some ways, is a different animal. I didn't feel Mc Cammon fleshed out the characters as well as Mr. King did in The Stand. Although, Swan and Josh were pretty rich characters. Still a very enjoyable read.
