I didn't see a spot for this movie in the list but I thought you'd like to hear about this.

"Amblin Entertainment has tapped filmmaker Josh Boone to pen the adaptation of The Talisman, the 1984 fantasy novel King co-wrote with Peter Straub, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed."

Stephen King's 'The Talisman' Nabs Josh Boone to Write Adaptation | Hollywood Reporter
I wanted this to be serialized. Do we know what the format will be? I'm assuming Amblin wants a two hour movie.

...but I'm excited. :D

So it's still with Amblin then? Interesting that they managed to hold on to the rights for so long. It's been decades.

I'm not thrilled that Boone is adapting it (of course, it will go through rewrites depending on how serious they are about pursuing this project). He was attached to The Stand and I read a review of his early draft. Fans would have hated the ending, which was a big superhero-style fight between the two factions (and I'm talking the entire of Boulder vs Vegas). As much as Boone is a self-professed fan of Mr King, I don't think the former has enough maturity and depth to handle the material. Of course, I stand to be corrected. In instances like this, I'm always happy to be wrong.

I didn't know he'd made such drastic changes to The Stand script. I'm glad that didn't happen.

Sounds good! I hope he stays true to the spirit of the story and is able to make it an epic journey, similar to the feel of the boys travelling towards their destination in the movie 'Stand By Me', only filled with more adventure, and further, but not as far as the tower, but way more than the long walk...I'm starting to see a theme here).

As weird as this is going to sound, coming from me.....I think the Talisman would be best as a tv series. As long as they stay true to the characters, they could write different stories. Well, usually they only stay true to the characters for the first season.

Agreed. I really would've liked to see this as a cable series. Frankly adapting it to a single film (if that's the plan) gives me pause. The Talisman is one of my favorite novels and to see it get butchered into a 2-hour adaptation would deeply hurt me.

I don't understand this line of thinking at all.

The movies don't take away from the books.

And no matter what, the books don't change.

Noted. But a bad adaptation pushes new readers away, which is a shame. I had a friend once tell me that they would never read Stephen King. Why? Because they had seen the movie Pet Sematary and thought it was horrible. I wonder how many people rushed out to buy The Gunslinger after viewing The Dark Tower film?

I can't help but feel a little protective of the books I love.

The kind of people that won't read an author because of the movie aren't generally the type of people that understand that the movie isn't the book.

That would be like saying, "I'm not going to read Asimov because I, Robot was a horrible movie."

And yes, I mean that as the direct comparison it is.

In other words, I don't put much value into the opinion of a person that actually says and/or thinks like that.

And here we go, with IT making 600 million prepare for the rush of rekindled interest in making Stephen King movie adaptions. With alot of the rights to things already being owned by someone or company, I can only imagine the things we are going to get. I will keep an open mind but if the past proves anything luck is not on our side for great adaptions. We are lucky IT turned out the way it did.

Disagree.

Watching a movie that butchers a book you loved does take away from it. Especially if it's a book you read many times.

After watching The Clan of The Cave Bear I could not read the book again for many years...not even some of the later books. Every time I tried, I "saw" Daryl. And certain scenes still haunt me for the horrible way they were portrayed.

This is why I will not ever watch the DT movie.

Fair enough.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree.

I've personally never allowed a movie to color my opinion of a book unless the movie added something noteworthy.

(Like when rereading Misery, Kathy Bates is Annie Wilkes.)

I'm so conflicted about this book becoming a movie. Jack and Wolf mean so much to me. I can't imagine the depths of their relationship being successfully captured on film.

I couldn't agree more. Jack and Wolf are two of my all-time favorite characters and I can't see a movie adaptation doing anything other than diminishing the relationship SK so skillfully crafted. So, I'll tell you what I'd like to see. Let's skip the movie and I'd like SK write a sequel to The Talisman. Maybe along the lines of how Doctor Sleep is a sequel to The Shining? Do you hear that, Mr. SK? Your constant readers want to visit Jack and Wolf again...right here and now. WOLF!

Hi, Josh Boone here. I happened to come across this and wanted to say that I never wrote a draft of The Stand with anything but the ending from the book. You are referring to a draft that preceded me, which I actively worked to ensure never got made because it was in no way an adaptation of the book, just fan fiction. I am still working on The Stand and will be making it next as soon as New Mutants opens in April as a limited series. I've been working on it for four years and I promise you it will be a faithful adaptation of the book with an incredible cast.
