Okay, usually I don't start threads over miniscule details in SK books but I've been thinking about this since June. I'm not posting anything I'm spoilers because nothing I plan to say has any bearing on the stories, and won't ruin anything for anyone who knows the general plots of the novels I'm going to mention.

'Round Here, the boy band in Mr. Mercedes is mentioned a few times in Doctor Sleep, a book heavily featuring Dick Hallorann. Therefore, 'Round Here exists in the same universe (or same level of the Tower) as Dick. In IT, Dick was mentioned as being at the fire at the Black Spot. HOWEVER, early on in Mr. Mercedes, one of the characters mentions the movie IT, meaning the film IT (and, by association, its source text) is purely fiction, existing on a different level of the Tower than the one Mr. Mercedes does.

My question is: how can that be? How can a boy band that's featured so prominently in a book that doesn't take place on the same level of the tower as IT also be in a book featuring Dick, a man in the book IT? It's as if Dick Hallorann exists on two levels of the Tower at once.

I know, I know..... This is crazy for me to post. I can enjoy the stories without answers. I just thought it was....interesting. Maybe to no one but me, but I still like thinking about it even if it makes my head hurt. Ow.

My head's hurting now too. Can we establish that all 3 books don't take part in the "keystone world" ie ours? We know IT isn't because Derry doesn't exist. What about the others?

Professor Brian Cox reckons there could be infinite parallel universes with an infinite number of you and I's. So why not an infinite number of Dick Hallorans?
Haha my head hurts too!

I suppose there being an infinite number of Dicks (shut up, Scott and KRF :biggrin2: ) is the only explanation.

*resists mentioning Jake Epping and his traveling back in time to Derry, which also could have an impact on it all*

When SK wrote about IT being a movie in this book, I took that to mean that Mr. Mercedes was not going to involve the supernatural and he wanted to let the reader know that this book was a break from the supernatural world. I think SK's reference to people in other books, in this case the boy band, isn't meant to be taken that they occur in the same universe. I know he's liked to mix universes before, but in this case I think he used the boy band for a plot device.

I was thinking some more, and realized it wouldn't be Dick on multiple levels but instead 'Round Here.

There is a boy band on more than one level of the Dark Tower--for that I am eternally grateful.
