I'm a bit confused too.

Stanley Kubrick decided that having the hedge animals come alive (as they do in the book) was unworkable due to restrictions in special effects, so he opted for a hedge maze instead. (Source: imdb)

I don't remember... was there a maze in the novel?

There was no maze in the novel. The closest thing would have been the "endless" corridors within the hotel.

They should use a likeness of Steve's face for the maze. After all, his writing of The Shining and using their hotel as a basis for the Overlook has brought them alot of dollars all these years.
