Many years ago, my grandmother sent me a book with a note that said, "Sweet Child, I think this fellow has a lot more books in him. If you like this one, let me know and I will go on buying them for you." True to her word, she did, the last in 1999. She died in 2000 and I kept up the tradition until two years ago when I developed corneal dystropy and as a result can no longer longer read. A friend who had been in the hospital for 8 miserable months got my entire first edition library in mint condition and I switched to audio books. To my horror, I am finding more and more abridged audio books. Mr. King chooses every word that goes into his books and each one is of inestimable value in the overall story line of each book. I cannot see the sense in abridging his work and I think he should not permit it.

I love his audio-books. Have you hada chance to listen to On Writing? It is narrated by him and by far my favorite.

...many welcomes, and no, his work should never be abridged...that is wrong in so many ways...
Thank you for that agreement. I believe he is a master of the written word and no audiobook company hack has any business messing with his craft, but since every one of the dang things says "Approved by the Author" I am horrified to believe that he agrees with hacking his books. I am never going to be of his class, but I am a published writer and I would scream the hills down if some stranger presumed to rewrite my work. Maybe he's just too busy to notice.

I haven't heard that one. I'm just so much the aficionado of his fiction that I shy away from his non-fiction in fear that I will lose my adoring groupie attitude toward him. Should I? Or will become jaded and no longer worship at the shrine of the master wordsmith?

. .I'm not sure about becoming jaded. More obsessive, possibly . . .one thing is for sure; you will NEVER look at an adverb the same way again!
