I personally love when Stephen changes things up, experiments, tries something new. It's all about growth and I want him to continue to enjoy his work so I can enjoy it with him. As I wrote to him in a fan letter many years ago, he is the Madonna of the publishing world. Minus the pointy boob cones. He has always been on the forefront of storytelling in all aspects and I so admire that.

Oh hell, I'm not going to get that image out of my noggin for a spell.

I mean, really. Why has Madonna stayed relevant up till the last 10 years or so? Because she changed constantly. Her gig was never stagnate. Love her, hate her -- she kept you watching.

Steve is the same way. Instead of fighting all the technology and changes in the world, he's embraced it all and used it for his needs and educated us along the way about not getting so set in your ways that you miss something terrific. At least I hope people got that message.

I think that if people are serious King fans, they can see the King in Mr. Mercedes pretty easily. I'm actually enjoying the change of pace! I'm tearing through it.

(Please don't get upset if you are a "serious King fan" and don't like Mr. Mercedes. I'm just saying it's there if you look for it.)
I agree 100% with you. King is there from the start; his carefully drawn characters, sense of place and time, language, etc. It's all there. I should be done with it by tomorrow; I love it!

Growth, schmowth.
He can plan (and grow with) a Mercedes trilogy but he can't do a third Talisman installment?? :glare:

I'm *so* complaining to management. *And* stalking Straub on Twitter. (Harumph.) (Just sayin'.)

I have to say I'm more interested in The Talisman's final chapter than this new trilogy. I'll read them all, of course, but I liked Mr. Mercedes better as a stand-alone thriller.

At least I hope he writes the protagonists solving new cases and not going after Brady over and over again. However, I wouldn't mind if Brady came back as some sort of consulting criminal à la Hannibal Lecter.

It happens, not all things are for all people.... I haven't read it yet, as amazon is being unusually slow with this delivery, but the reviews I've read have been either Extremely positive or extremely negative..... Mostly positive, but the people who hate it, seem to really hate it....

I don't hate it, per se, Tommyknockers was the only book of his I actually hated. It was simply average for me. It didn't grab me like I thought. I'm glad others like it, but it felt far too padded. This could have been a really taut novella, instead of a plodding novel.
