It's some kind of space age type gun that the artist made up. It's a 'ray gun' that shrinks people.
Funny thing is I found the original copy (sans Dust jacket) at a Goodwill in downtown Seattle. I have no idea how it ended up there. I believe that 'Patti' and Tabitha must have known each other. You're right, it seems to be an inside joke or something. I hope Tabby isn't going to be too mad at 'Patti' for getting rid of the book!

It may be a familly member who had no idea it was sighned, or perhaps someone trying to cash in on the name and realized she did not sell for a high amount. Who knows
I work at a local good will and am checking his first hard copies of his early books in case one is sighned. It's a really low chance but then again he did sighn books sent to him via the mail

Graveyard shift is a cast iron b**ch to get used to. I worked 9pm-7am for about a year and a half at the PD. I could NEVER get a good sleep schedule going the whole time. As soon as a spot opened up back on afternoon shift, I jumped at it. I admire people who work night shift long term, but it sucks for me personally.
