I understand that the chances of Stephen King actually reading this are small, but I will write as though I were speaking to him.

I have always had a personal attachment to the character of Danny Torrance in The Shining. As a young child my parents responded to a casting call for the role of Danny in the movie. I was one of the finalists for the role, partially because my name is Dan. One of my oldest memories is of going to a hotel in downtown Chicago to interview for it. I remember meeting Shelley Duvall and thinking how nice (and pretty) she was.

I always had a lot of questions as to how Danny would grow up. How would the shining affect his ability to have personal relationships? Would he find others like himself? Would he have the same problems his father struggled with? Obviously, Doctor Sleep answers these questions and for that I am grateful. There are several eerie parallels between Dan Torrance's life and my own. I also have a daughter named Abby who we have always called "Abba-Doo" (creepy).

Thank you for returning to Dan Torrance, it means more than I can say.

I also hope that Stephen happens to read this. Really moving and nice story. To the best of my understanding Stephen had a certain someone in mind when creating Abby character to this great sequel. And now the obivious question is, how life will treat Abby? I hope that we will eventually find out.

The Shining has long been my favourite Stephen King novel because I fell in love with the Danny Torrence character. (One thing I've always appreciated about Stephen is that he does great kid characters.) Some time ago (I can't remember when) I experienced a bit of serendipity.

One evening I was thinking that I'd really like to see a sequel to The Shining, showing what happened to Danny when he grew up. After all, there was a sequel to The Talisman (Black House) that featured Jack Sawyer as an adult. Then I decided to check out what was new at the SK website and that's when I found out about Doctor Sleep. Alright! I waited impatiently for the release date and when I bought the book, I was not disappointed.

I was pleased that Dan had grown up to be a good guy, even if he did have demons to battle. And when the chips were down, he stepped up to battle evil.
