lol -- my apologies: i was just ranting out loud, it was not directed at you (even though i used your quote)

I know. I didn't take it that way.

I enjoy a good rant, myself!

Of course, I also enjoy a good chant...

I can't go see a show no more.
There's a man behind the scenes
who's not familiar with the source material
smoking an e-cigarette...

(I don't answer the phone now, have I told you that?)

While Iam absolutely pumped to see the Dark Tower movie, especially having read almost all of the companion books(I only lack the Daughters of Eluria) as well as the whole series, I couldn't help but notice certain things that are nowhere near accurate, while I understand that no movie will probably ever live up to the book, I'm absolutely sick of studios taking liberties just because they feel like they can. Aside from using Edris Elba (a great actor btw) in the role of Roland for obvious reasons, or using Mathew McConaughey as the man in black(I feel like he'd have been a much better Roland) they made Jake out to be in his mid teens, what's up with that? What's next, will Susannah/Detta/Odetta be white, will Eddie be from L.A.? Will Roland take Aleve for pain? Will it be giant roaches coming out of the sea instead of the crustaceans? Sometimes I wish Hollywood would pull their heads out of their butts.

Well, I had some of the same thoughts and I'm not alone. Then I came to understand that this is not the books; it is the next time around for Roland. So, while some things will be familiar, others won't. Roland has the Horn this time...

....all one can do, is enjoy the adaptation as a stand alone project that has familiar folks-not as a faithful re-telling.....

The thing with Jake is, if this movie is going to launch a series, there is no way to keep Jake from aging. If there are a series of movies, it's gonna take ten years or so to film them all. So, rather than cast an age-appropriate child actor, who may or may not turn out to be a good actor later, taking the approach of casting an older - teen - actor that has some proven chops is a prudent choice.

I would love to see a version of Jake where he doesn't age over the course of the movies but it's not possible. So I'm reconciled with using an older Jake. Here's hoping Tom Taylor does a great job playing Jake.

so i'm now into 'wolves of cala' on my 5th trek to the tower, and i have to share a view to all you haters.(me included) i was none too happy with the idea of watching somebody else's follow on DT story, i have my own idea thank ye say true.

I was the 6th member of the ka tet for years as i listened to Roland's plight through the voice of Frank Muller. To me he was both eddie/Jake/susanna/Roland all in one. his voice was their voice - when Roland spoke in my head it was Frank, always has been, always will be.

now, here's the thing- i have now stumbled once more as Franks voice takes the path to the clearing, and a new reader takes his place in the form of George Guidelle. Once again i mourn the loss of Franks Roland. Once again i pause the CD and shake my head, "that's not Eddie, that's not Jake, that's not Susanna and it sure as hell ain't roland- not my roland!

but here's the thing, he is roland, just through the eyes of someone else. And i hear that now. Sure it's taken me until the palaver with the cala folk to say so ya ken it, but it's him for sure .

so i'm ready now say true, i've put all my doubts aside if it does ye, and am now ready to walk alongside the new Ka daddy. Sure he's not my Roland, but mayhaps he's somebodies - and that's good enough for me.

we deal in lead my friends- let's ride out and face the wolves together when that horn of Eld is finally held aloft at the Tower.

When Stephen King writes it, I'm there. I'm happy for you and your epiphany but I do not share it. There is only one Roland, and he met the Taleslinger in the pages himself. There is one Roland and one King. :D All the rest is fan fiction. I hope it turns out to be good fan fiction, but it will never be part of the canon until King writes it.

I squirm every time an article includes - need to see - because it sets expectations and conveys entitlement. OTOH I do agree with the article except about the movie's rating. I would be super surprised if it gets an 'R' rating.

Adendum: I hate it when posers pretend to be true fans and only know bits and pieces of what they are talking about, and then want to tell us what should and shouldn't be in the adaptation. She doesn't know what the hell she's talking about, she lists The Gunslinger as book #2, doesn't begin to describe It right, and completely underestimates the number of King fans out there, she's a hack, I just hope sooner or later they get it right.

It is sad when an author says things that make it appear they don't understand their own work or more likely don't care. The issues with the dt movie is not just fans having a different vision. Making it the next telling after the books does not solve the issues. No it makes no sense for Roland to ever be black. Change Odetta, fine, but it is clear the 'real' world and Roland's are key worlds. The Tower IS Roland's life. Black Roland isn't a twim from one of those othere where and when's, he is unique as those in the real world are. Saying Roland is black tells the audience that they must pretend the books didn't happen. SK saying it never says anywhere that Roland is Caucasian creates the image of him holding a check in one hand and flipping the bird at all his fans.

I'm going to resist getting my rhetorical sledgehammer out of the closet. Don't go watch the film. I won't go see it unless the reviews are awesome and people I trust in regards to King's work tell me it is worth seeing. Film adaptations of books are always (even when they are good) faint echoes of the the real stories. They are shoddy imitations. At their worst they are laughable wastes of time and insults to our general intelligence. They do not, however, have any bearing on the books. We will always have those. The movie is not canon. Films are visual fan fiction. Your ire is misdirected and unfair. Thank the man who wrote the books and created the characters you adore. Blame him not for the films which others have wrought. It makes you sound ungrateful and foolish.
