Excellent movie & watched so much surprised D.V.D. is still useable. So prophetic. Granted, Hollywood went too far w/Walken's, seizure-like spells. But part Martin Sheen played? Bush Jr. to a T. Classic, Academy Award, even Noble Peace Prize material (lol). Seriously though, depicted human condition & what would we do in real life.....if we definitively/without a doubt knew an evil Hitler was on his way? Really makes one ponder how we would handle such a dilemma (something wicked this way comes, undoubtedly).

P.S.: Listened to archived N.P.R./Fresh Air interview re: Stephen King. Included general synopsis of what scares King. My scariest, "motivator" was Laffing Sal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. (The laughing & those eyes....eeeeehhhhh).

Welcome Debria - it's a very good book. I have yet to see the movie but hope I get a chance some day!

David Cronenberg did a marvelous job. The music is sheer emotion and subtly mysterious. I have come to accept this adaptation more as I've gotten older and I forgive much of what other viewers may perceive as melodrama. I think it works well because the tone is established early and very serious moments are given a grave attention and their meaning emphasized. The scene where
the boy's father is sitting in the chair while the phone rings incessantly is incredible. Johnny is calling to make sure that his prediction didn't come true and the boy didn't drown as was feared. The boy's father is paralyzed in disbelief and guilt. Great scene.
The viewer is never asked to determine if Johnny's ability is a gift or a curse but, rather, asked to think about fate and the ethics of tinkering with furure events. Tragic, cold, and sad but somehow very rewarding. Walken captures the soul of Johnny Smith, Everyman. His predicament becomes our predicament. Solid adaptation.

I just finished reading The Dead Zone and it is still very clear in my mind. I perceive that God had already marked Johnny to do his work. There's a scene where Johnny is tutoring Chuck and Chuck reads some sentence from a Max Brand story and it is like foreshadowing God's thoughts(or that's my take on it) saying he didn't want him to die but sometimes it has to be done for the greater good. I think it's in the top ten of King's books. Edit: Chuck is the teenager he was tutoring.

Hello, I am in hopes that someone can help me. I just purchased Dead Zone in hardcover to replace my other copy. My question is, does the 1st ed/1st print have the 625 Madison Ave address on the DJ and CR page or 40 West as some of the older books ? All other points seem to follow 1st/1st. TY so much :)
