It's been well documented in books and magazines that this is what went on while they were making this film. Some of it may be embellished a bit, but most of it's right on target. Bette herself wrote about it in a book and discussed it on talk shows later in her career.

I've been watching 'Feud' which is about Joan Crawford and Bette Davis and the making of 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?'. It stars Jessica Lange & Susan Sarandon. OMG, it's fantastic! Unbelievable. And largely based on fact. These girls did not play! To paraphrase Negan from 'TWD', these chicks had beach ball sized lady nards.

Great pic HollyGolightly -- there she was in all her glory! Crawford was a limited actress, but hustled her hind end off. You have to respect her. She was apparently sweeter to her fans than she was to nearly anyone else. Bette Davis was an incredible talent, but certainly no saint. Her daughter wrote a negative tell-all book just like Crawford's did. Maybe just for the $$$, I dunno. I recently was reading about a horror movie I LOVE called Burnt Offerings (1979), And Davis was really ripping up Oliver Reed & Karen Black in interviews. Jezus, who could get mad at Karen Black?!! In her last film Whales of August (1987), the director (Lindsay Anderson) talked about what a tough shoot he had with Davis & Lillian Gish -- constantly going after each other. Lillian Gish, 15 yrs older was 93! You'd think Bette would have cut the old gal some slack. But no. He mentions they became nicer after Vincent Price began filming, as they both became quite smitten with him. That old pimp! Love that guy.

The thing that is so humorous about this film is, who pays an old couple 900 dollars to stay at their house, work your azz off to maintain the place, babysit a "mother" and thinks they got a great vacation deal?
Usually people pay you to do all the cleaning and home improvement. They pay you to babysit a child or elder. But no, the Rolfe's paid THEM for time in the country at a falling-apart-house.
I'd take that 900 and spend a couple nights in a super hotel that would cater to MY needs.

That's hilarious. It would cost you 3 times that today to stay at the Motel 6 for the summer! Oliver Reed at least questioned if she was taking on too much. 'Offerings' (oops! Released in 1976, not 1979) has risen in stature over the years, I think. It shows how times have changed, Bette as Aunt Elizabeth, at 68 is looked upon as an old lady. That's younger than Susan Sarandon is now! Look at some of this. If accurate (It's TMC -- so it probably is), The people involved would have been a lot happier with Joan Crawford! If she'd been a bit younger and in shape to do it, I doubt she would have caused nearly as much grief. I love Bette though. She was tough as nails. But Joan could've survived a zombie apocalypse.

Burnt Offerings is in my DVR vault. I watch it all the time.
If you read the book, it pretty much follows the book, word for word -- the ending is different in the movie. The ending in the book is a scene used earlier in the movie and then the director tacked on his own ending, which I actually like.
Should I read the book? On a scale of The Stand to Twilight?
