I've been taking a break from King, but yesterday I decided to read the opening of Doctor Sleep. Thought it was excellent. It could even have served as a short-story sequel to The Shining all on its own.
We've talked about who the scariest villain is before, and I have to say -- Black Grandpa (think that was what he was called in the narrative, Dick's grandfather) is rather repulsive.
I loved the concept of the lockbox.
A question: Charlie Manx was mentioned, which is a character from Joe Hill's work. Do you think Black Grandpa referred to an actual being when he invoked the name, or was he merely fooling with his grandson by bringing up what is, in the Doctor Sleep world, merely a fictional character? (Yes, the timing would be off in terms of when the actual Hill book was published, but that wouldn't really be important.) I prefer to pretend it is simply a fictional character in King's fictional world. But I ask also because I don't know whether the character appeared later on in the book.
I was flipping through the book and read a few scenes here and there. Came across the gruesome death of that kid, was he a Boy Scout? Not sure, but I wanted to see other death scenes where the Knot was feeding on steam, and as far as I could tell, there were no others. Is that accurate? I know -- read the book. But I was just curious, because I seriously flipped through a few times and could only find that one scene. Thought it would be off if there were no more examples of how evil that group was.
