SOOO...I'm reading this book and loving the heck out of it. On page 170 SK asks we give this exercise a try. 5-6 pages. Well, mine ended up being nine. I was worried there for a minute...this is a time span of a few years all in just a few pages so it seemed rushed then I remembered, we're just finding the bones...the bare bones of perhaps a short story or novel. Just unearthing ... so it's okay! He gave the premise, then turned it on its head. Not like anything I've written previously, but I just sat down and did it and it was great fun. I've attached the first two graphs here. (if anyone wants more, give a yell). Let's just say there's a stiletto theme that emerges and I think the sufficiently dark ending might please SK. Off to finish the book. Take care.

So, there is no correct place to do what SK says in "On Writing?" I know the book has been around a long time, but I'm just now reading it and hoped there was a place on this site specifically for posting the exercise as he says to do.

Afraid not. As mentioned in the FAQ, we stopped accepting those not too long after the book was published.

Why can't people post their fossils here? I came to this thead hoping I'd be amused reading what people wrote. After all, people in this site enjoy reading (I assume), and I wanted to know if the stories were similar. I once read that if you asked a thousand people to describe a cup, there wouldn't be two similar description. I doubt that, I find very likely that two people could simply say "a small yellow cup" (for instance) being this the simplest description.
Anyway, in the assignment SK gives the basics of the story, and I'd very much would like to find out what people wrote.
So even if SK doesn't take any more submissions, why not let people use the forum to discuss their results? Knowing he wouldn't read them himself?

There's no reason why you can't discuss your experiences with writing the exercise but it could end up with a very lengthy thread to post the actual exercise if we allowed that for everyone who wanted to submit it. And even though it was an idea suggested by Steve, it makes it easier for us to stick with his attorneys' recommendations not to have original writing by others on his site.
