Well, I'd been trying to get to this one for months. Since it won an Emmy I figured I better watch. So I started today. Up to episode eight. I have to say -- and I didn't read the book (which will be remedied soon) -- it is terrifying. I mean, this is what the Dominionists want to do here. It's like they're using the book as a manual. Getting all three branches of our government, passing laws that put men in charge of everything... it's Sharia Law with the Bible. And if I say anything more, this will belong in the Politics forum.

Elizabeth Moss won an Emmy for her performance and it was well-deserved. She is submerged in the role of Offred. The supporting cast is amazing, too. There is some nudity and violence so it's not for the kiddies. I think its Emmy win was the right choice.

Finished the first season today. Started reading the book last night. I needed to fill some stuff out that I either missed or didn't get. It also made me realize that their names are indicative of their "commander." Of Fred. Yeah, I'm really not that derpy, usually.

I grew more impressed with Elizabeth Moss with every episode. She really made me believe she is Offred. Also, the actress portraying Aunt Lydia is so good! I started out hating her, then thought "she does seem to care about her girls," then hating her again. But, my gawd, that last episode,

with the attempt to stone Janine and Offred's act of defiance and Aunt Lydia's reaction. Wow. But I kept thinking "she's pregnant - surely the Watermans won't allow her to be taken and she can't be harmed."

And I had a moment of sheer love for Canada because I know that they would take us in as refugees. They've already done so. Let's hope we don't ever have to flee north for the reasons in this story.

Thank goodness I have Hulu so I can start watching with episode 1 of season two.

I liked the novel and I would love to see the series but I don't have Hulu :( I looked up the cast... The commander is much better looking than I imagined him :) Does the series pull off the scenes with Offred, the commander and the commander's wife well?
I think they do. I agree with you, I thought the commander was way too good looking. He needed to be a little more repugnant, but, I went with it and allowed myself to see him as the oppressor and a bad guy.

Trivia: Max Minghella who plays Nick in The Handmaid's Tale also played Lee in Horns. I've been wanting to see Horns too. Do y'all know if Horns is the only novel by Joe Hill that's been made into a movie?
I think??? so, but I believe there are more movies from his writing in the works.

I loved it. I thought it was well done and she definitely deserved that Emmy.

And I've read the book, seen the movie adaptation with Robert Duvall and Faye Dunaway and this series. Enjoyed them all.

Didn't know there was a movie - thanks for the info! I read the book maybe six months ago and was blown away. Haven't watched it on Hulu yet.

I didn't know there was a movie either. Thanks Dana Jean :) I'm a big fan of Robert Duvall. I can picture him as the commander and Faye Dunaway as the commander's wife.

One thing I forgot to mention. One thing I actually liked about the Republic of Gilead and that was the birthing. I love the idea of the mother being surrounded by women. As only women can understand fully what is going on, they should be running the show. I know of several women's groups (Dianic Witches) who do this. I think it's wonderful... except for the Wife being treated as though she is doing the job and being brought in and the baby given to her.

BTW, found out that the actress who played Aunt Lydia -- Ann Dowd -- DID win an Emmy for her performance. Brava :)

The actress who played Aunt Lydia was also in the TV show (or short film - I think "made for TV"?) they made of Big Driver

I'm the only person I know who hasn't seen this yet, but I did read the novel. I met Margaret Atwood twice. I've enjoyed a dozen of her books. I've just been working on a lot of different things and busy with my job.

I haven't read anything by Margaret Atwood but she was on the BBC and PBS news shows the other night doing interviews and promoting her new book. She is a no BS person. :) I loved the interviews, she was great. I'm going to have to read one of her books now.
