Yep, scary alright. I think GN always posts up a cracking monkey pic when he see's a thread about this story. :)
...egads!...I hate that death-rictus grin on that wind-up furball!....

A couple of years ago, when I was listening to my local rock music radio station, the DJ made some comments about how creepy she found those wind-up monkeys with cymbals. So I phoned her up to ask "Did you know there's an old Stephen King story about one of those?" and gave her a quick summary of how the monkey worked. The DJ hadn't known about that story.

This was one of the scariest Stephen King stories i've ever read. The way he described the monkey i almost could feel its fur like i was holding the creepy thing my self. Did anyone else think this one was disturbing as well?

Disturbing seems particularly apt. Not so much scary. But yes, disturbing. Chattery Teeth strikes a similar chord with me. A simple thing that just about anyone might have sitting on a shelf or tucked away in a drawer, suddenly presented in a new (and disturbing) way; something that can no longer be looked at the same way it once was.

It's funny (there's that word again) how we infuse things -- and yes, people, too -- with what we think we know, never realizing the world of possibilities just beyond what we don't dare consider.

Or maybe that's just me.

I should have been more scared of this - when I was about five I saw a live monkey that a guest had brought to our house - had a terrible nightmare about it that same night.
