Halfway through the book so far....just got to the part where
Alec says, "It's not just a long story, but a strange one." And Holly laughs.."Yours won't be the first strange story I've ever heard."
I busted out laughing myself. Having Finders Keepers show up is like running into a long lost friend!

Finished! A good summer read.
The first half is mostly detective genre. The second half struck me more as something from the X-Files or one of those old Kolchak movie monsters of the week. I thought the parts that were set in the present, as opposed to the investigation of things that had already happened, were most effective. In particular, the trips to the barn (creepy) and the walk to the courthouse were good if only a very small part of the book. The ending struck me as predictable with the inevitable confrontation. Old Holly sure made use of those socks again. The book is much better than Sleeping Beauties. An entertaining summer novel but a middling King effort (which is still pretty good reading). It's basically The Dark Half meets Colorado Kid/Bill Hodges IV. I thought some of the secondary characters were more interesting than the main characters.

Just finished reading it tonight...
I'm new to these forums and have only started reading King's stuff recently, after threatening to do so for a long time.
Since a month ago, I've read Misery, Carrie, The Stand, and now, The Outsider.
The Outsider is an amazing piece of work. The layout of the book is beautiful. Couldn't have put it down if I had tried.
Yeah, it's a detective novel, but none like I've ever read. The man is just a ****in genius. Love his books and I'm delighted that there's enough more there for me to read to(hopefully) last out my lifetime.
It's a piece of art. 5/5

Since you liked The Outsider, you might also like the Bill Hodges trilogy. Those titles are Mr. Mercedes, Finders Keepers, and End of Watch.

Just opened The Shining today but I may just read those 3 after this.
Loved the character of Holly and heard she's in that trilogy, if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Picked this up last week and devoured it by bedtime. I tend to tear through books like a bull in a china shop, then go back and take my time. (I'm an impatient person!)

It almost feels like a sequel of sorts to End of Watch. It is, sort of. The Outsider himself reminds me of Fish, (Black House baddie), insofar as style and manner of kills, though the motivation behind the kills are completely different.(or mostly so, at any rate.) Ehm.. as far as what do I think the Outsider is? Probably a relative of Dandelo and Pennywise, a creature from the Prim, if I had to categorize it. Instead of feeding on laughter like Dandelo, it feeds on...other stuff. Loved getting to see Holly again! It was like running into an old dear friend at the market you haven't seen in a few years. I thought the entire premise of the book and moral paradoxes it presents made it even more of a gem.

I tried to shy away from downright spoilers here, so with that, I'll shut my fingertips up! xD
