"The Regulators" when was the 'special 1st edition' published by Dutton?
When was the regular ol' first edition of "The Regulators" published?
Much Obliged, Hook

You can find information about Stephen's works on the main part of the stephenking.com site in the Library. The entry for The Regulators can be found here. And the limited edition entry is here.

This seems to roundly be considered one of SK's most inferior works based on what I have read since I started coming to this site. Now someone explain to me why I frickin' like it so much. Lol, I had a blast the entire way through it. I loved the suburban atmosphere and the cartoon-ish nature of the story. I think I am in the minority though.

I'm reading it now and am liking it very much. A couple of people I have spoken to recently have also enjoyed it a lot.

I read it right after Desperation, and was a little disappointed in that it was so unlike Desperation which I loved. I guess I expected it to be similar due to having read of certain parallels. Also, I was still a relative CR newbie (if that's not too oxymoronic), and so unfamiliar with sK's range.

It's been a long time since I read Desperation, so this may be part of the difference?

You mean this might be why you like it? I think maybe so. It's such an entire departure from Desperation to me, to any other novel virtually, in fact. Closest one I can compare to is Insomnia.
Yes, why I'm enjoying it this much--to me it is separate from The Regulators... it's just a different story. I don't mind that the characters are the same people doing different things.

Me either, doesn't bother me in the least. I didn't even know the characters overlapped when I started reading Regulators so I went into it expecting that they would be completely unrelated.

I just got Desperation on CD, read by Kathy Bates and it's my first spoken book. It is weird to have someone else read to you - this hasn't been done for me since about grade six or seven!

Over the past 6 years or so I have become a SK Audiobook junkie. I have about a 40 minute drive to work so I have lots of time in the car. I'd say I own about 25 stories on Audio at this point. I promise I still do read though ha ha. I am doing my 3rd go round of The Stand right now in the evenings.

So how do you go back to the point in the story where you left off once you have to turn off the CD? (serious question here)

My player in my car always remembers what track it's on and picks up right where it left off when it starts back up. Now if I feel like taking a break to listen to music I finish the current track it's on then memorize which track I am on for the next day, then I pick up where I left off. Very scientific system I have. :victorious:

I LOVE The Regulators! It is one of my top 10 SK books for exactly the reasons you state! It is also my favorite type of SK story: put a bunch of smalltown people in a bizarre situation and watch what happens!

I read The Regulators before Desperation and personally I preferred it. Somehow Desperation seemed a little too drawn out to me, whilst The Regulators I sped through. I don't want to say that The Regulators was 'lighter' because obviously it was pretty weird and lots of horrible things happen but I somehow felt it was not as serious or heavy on the "good versus evil themes" that King likes so much. Someone else said it was 'cartoonish' and I think that's a good description as it was so out there and over the top.
