This one was chilling. Reminded me of an old Night Gallery episode. But it's the first story I've read in a long time to really make me a little nervous. I like King's detail: especially with respect to the vehicle and its design, words on it, sound, tires, etc. And, of course, the whole concept...I mean, what do you do in such a situation?

That one read to me like a jump back to his early stories, and I liked it. His later stories moved so far into 'internal' horror and conflict that it felt refreshing to go back to a true outside actor who is outside the bounds of everyday possibility and reality. It was a Michael Meyers-type painting; i.e., it couldn't be stopped, and with no good reason.

Tom Berenger plays the haunted horror author in the made-for-TV adaptation from (oddly enough) Nightmares & Dreamscapes. It's very loyal to the story, and almost as scary.

I've never seen the movie but I always thought Mr. Berenger is very handsome.

I'm just re-reading this. The woman running the garage sail is named 'Judy Diment'. The lady who lived in the garage sale house is named 'Iris' (The mother of the road virus guy). There is a female singer I like who's name is 'Iris Diment'. I wonder if Mr. King is a fan of 'Iris Diment' and this was his 'hats off' to her.
She has sung with John Prine. A favorite!!

Okay. We aren't just going to walk away from this.

I do NOT want to have a mental picture of Mal and his wife Joyce singing these lyrics to each other. I don't want that in my head. Nope.
The Road Virus Heads North is the next selection for the group discussion ;)

mal ?

Speaking of viruses I just heard that possibly troops might be stationed near the Canadian border to detect "irregular crossers"

Quote from the article:

Any militarization on or near the Canadian border would be a stark departure from traditional relations between the two countries as the Canadian-US border has traditionally been recognized as one of the longest non-militarized borders in the world.

As of March 25, there are currently more than 63,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States.
At the same time in Canada, there are 1,959.

I think they got it wrong - maybe it would be Americans trying to get into Canada?

Right now they are saying it is "definitely a head scratcher" (on my TV news)

Sorry to reply to my own post but the update says there are now over 3400 cases in Canada and 35 deaths.

Even here in Manitoba we jumped from 21 to 35 in one day (they attribute it to travellers returning home from vacation)
