I will be watching the premiere of AMC's The Son, a show based on the Philip Meyer novel of the same name. I didn't read it but I did read his first book, American Rust, when it came out. He reminds me of Tom Franklin, Cormac McCarthy and Faulkner.

Description:

Influenced by his indoctrination into a Comanche tribe as a youth, a man manages a cattle empire.

Anyone going to watch?

I'm paying attention to it because of Pierce Brosnan - always liked him. The trailer made me think of those John Jakes novels I used to love (North & South, The Kent Family Chronicles).

I usually wait until the whole season is over so I can watch it. Lemme know what you think of the pilot, Doc.

Hey, that's great...I used to read John Jakes, too. I still own the North and South trilogy. I love huge sprawling family sagas like that. Did you have a favorite series or book?

I'll let you know what I think, no problem.

I really loved North & South. My teacher made us read it in secondary school when we were studying American History, but it was already popular in class because of the mini-series on TV. I read the entire Kent collection, but if I had to pick a favourite it would be N&S, because I think that is such an interesting period in American history. I read the first book of the Crown family saga, but never got around to the others. Jakes' books are prime material for great TV dramas; I wish somebody would option his stories.

Anybody watch this all the way through? I recorded them but have had the book in the TBR pile for a couple years (;-D)and wanted to read it first. I'm only about 50 pages in, but am liking it so far. The time jumps threw me for a bit, but I think I'm getting the characters sorted out in my head.

Anyway, was the series good?

I lost interest. I'm not watching that much TV lately. I'll be curious to know how you like the book, though, and its comparison to the show if you watch.

Ok, Doc Creed

I am a little more than halfway through the book. I figured it would be safe to start the show. Lots of differences, they omitted an entire generation of the family in the show, which automatically makes the timeline not work. Pierce Brosnon plays Eli, and while his character is one of the main characters, he is not THE main character. Seems like they changed it to make everything revolve around him in the show. The book focuses on Eli, his son Peter and his great-granddaughter Jeannie, they are all equally important in their own way. And the family were cattle barons before oil people, they have skipped right over that along with the missing generation.

I only watched the first hour because they were touching on things I am just now getting to in the book. But my opinion so far is that the book is far superior. I am enjoying the book very much!

I think I'd like the book then, after hearing your review. His first book was good, too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I think you would like it, too. It has been easy to get lost in the pages and story. The hardest thing for me was getting the characters and time jumps straight in my head, each chapter focuses on one character, and since they are different generations, different events to mentally connect to the whole. There is a handy dandy family tree at the beginning, which I referenced often at first!

It has been renewed for a second season! They are having auditions this Saturday for native Americans, and my friend Keith Longhorns Jr. is going to audition! That would be so cool if he got a [art!
I've been talking to him the last couple of days, and he is excited, and nervous! I know he will do great though.
