I read this story last night. It is a fantastic short story. I added it to my list of all time favourite short stories. I love how he's standing outside the hospital door and it switches in his thoughts when he buys beer. This story has a personal resonance as well. When you read a story like this you realise he is a genius writer. Johnny, are my legs together?

This is a pretty personal story for King. The first time I read Night Shift (way back in 1979 when it was published in paperback) the stories in it blew my mind! There is so much variety in how they're written and in the stories alone. Just look at the difference in the first story (Jerusalem's Lot) and the last one (The Woman In The Room). This is when I really took notice of just how much talent Steve had and I eagerly continued to wait for each new book to be released afterwards.

that dollhouse at the end of the street
It was my very first short story compilation, I had only just met Stephen recently in the Bag of Bones at that time and had finished it and went out to look for more and was thrilled to find one with short stories.

I had to have it, cause even tho the cover of it creeped me out, I stood in bookstore for some time debating it and my sis was with me saying 'you cant judge a book by its cover' and I couldnt resist it and to this day its my one and only SK book on the shelf that has no cover cause i tore it off which i laugh about fondly now, but i didnt judge the book by its cover. ;-D

That poor book without its cover, its still my treasure. .... this was the cover it had ... :bones:

I found this story to be an odd addition to Night Shift. Aside from The Last Rung On The Ladder it stood alone from the rest of the horror in the book. I felt a profound sense of sadness when reading this story and wished I hadn't read it once I had finished.
