About the Book:

"A blizzard is slamming into Vermont, but it doesn't matter to Meg Clarke. She knows she'll be trapped in her music store in the shopping mall overnight with a small crew of her employees doing one final inventory.

But after they're locked in for the night, they realize this isn't a normal winter storm. Ghastly faces appear in the store windows and disappear in a swirl of wind-blown snow. Dark, mysterious figures loom in and out of sight in the darkened corridors of the mall. Ghostly voices shriek inside the howling blasts of winter wind. Soon Meg and the others are besieged by something too terrifying to imagine.

Before the night is over, a terrible secret from Meg's past will come back to haunt her and the group's only chance to survive will be to go out into the raging storm that's trying to kill them..."

My thoughts:

While this book took the scenic route to get to the meat of the story, once I got there, the action came fast and the story had a nice flow. After the last book I read, it was a refreshing palette cleanser. Thank you for the no-long-drawn-out-young-adult-sex-scene-in-the-face-of-danger crap that horror seems to feel is necessary to entice an audience. When it's necessary for the story, it's necessary. And when it's not? Thanks for not forcing it.

I seem to be one that is always reminded of other things when I read. I guess that's just one of those things that happens when you spend your time with your nose in a book or your face plastered against the TV screen. I saw many influences throughout the tale, but again, it stands on its own two feet as a very serviceable story.

Quick read, loved the short chapters. Perfect cover art by Cortney Skinner.

This sounds similar to a book I read last year called Snowblind by Christopher Golden.

9. FEMME

By Bill Pronzini

About the Book:

"Femme fatale. French for "deadly woman."

You hear the term a lot these days, usually in connection with noir fiction and film noir. But they're not just products of literature or film, the folklore of nearly every culture. They exist in modern society, too. The genuine femme fatales you hear about now and then are every bit as evil as the fictional variety. Yet what sets them apart is that they're the failures, the ones who for one reason or another got caught. For every one of those, there must be several times as many who get away with their destructive crimes...

In the thirty years the Nameless Detective has been a private investigator, he has never once had the misfortune to cross paths with this type of seductress... but in Femme he'll meet Cory Beckett, a deadly woman who has brought some new angles to the species. New—and terrible."

My Thoughts:

First, I absolutely love this cover. Artist Glen Orbik does a brilliant job here. Pretty little book.

Second, the story. Another quick read for me. Smooth writing that allowed for a nice flow of words that kept pulling me along. And once again, short chapters -- which I love as it helps me to stay completely immersed in the story -- in the moment -- with the author and his characters as the action unfolds.

I've known a lot of femme fatales in my life, although they were not deadly in the I'm-going-to-kill-this-boob sense. But, they definitely knew how to use what they had to mesmerize men and get what they wanted or needed from them.

The deadly woman in this book is a real number and her story was fun albeit totally messed up. And she had no qualms about doing "what was necessary, whatever was necessary," to achieve the results she wanted -- as you will see when your eyes bug out at the end.

Interesting nameless detective and his agency. I have another book in my TBR pile by this author that involves this private dick, so I'm hoping I will get more information and a bigger picture about this guy.

Fun ride.

I pre-ordered the Trade and Artist Editions. That $1500 edition sold out really fast. Those serious collectors don't mess around.

You got that right. They swoop in fast.

If I was loaded, I would be buying up gorgeous books. I would have these unbelievable book shelves just loaded with these books. From all authors, all genres, all publishers. Some girls like shoes, some girls like jewelry -- I'm a book girl.
