I am very disappointed. I usually purchase a grab bag for myself to put under my tree. There wasn't one to purchase this year that was promised this year.

Although I do have a grab bag order that I purchased 2 years ago. It was supposed to be delivered last year and then the company had all this trouble with their press. So, I was holding out hope that maybe I would get it this year. It's looking bleak.

Nothing to open this year. :near_tears: Don't be sad for me. I'm waiting for my new king sized bed to be delivered, so that will be my present. It's kind of not the same as my books, though.

I'm not sure I don't think so. I ordered this 2 years ago. This appears to be something new. They need to start differentiating their grab bags better. They call them all the same thing and the only way you can really know is to go look at your order number.

I'm having dinner with Rich Chizmar tonight. Would you like me to mention this? :)

Shining in the Dark

Editor Hans-Ãke Lilja

About the Book:

Hans-Åke Lilja, founder of Lilja's Library, has compiled a brand new anthology of horror stories to celebrate twenty years of running the #1 Stephen King news website on the web!

This anthology includes both original stories like a brand new novella by John Ajvide Lindqvist (Let the Right One In), very rare reprints like "The Blue Air Compressor" by Stephen King, and at least one classic tale that inspired Lilja's love of the macabre at a very young age!

Now, let's join Lilja... He's already waiting for us, there ahead in the darkness... You see him, don't you? Just keep walking, you'll find him soon enough, we promise... He's there, shining and waiting for you... Take his hand and then you, too, will shine in the dark!

Table of Contents

"Celebrating 20 Years of Lilja's Library (An Introduction) by Hans-Åke Lilja
"The Blue Air Compressor" by Stephen King
"The Net" by Jack Ketchum and P. D. Cacek
"The Novel of the Holocaust" by Stewart O'Nan
"Aeliana" by Bev Vincent
"Pidgin and Theresa" by Clive Barker
"An End To All Things " by Brian Keene
"Cemetery Dance" by Richard Chizmar
"Drawn to the Flame" by Kevin Quigley
"The Companion" by Ramsey Campbell
"A Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe
"A Mother's Love" by Brian James Freeman
"The Keeper's Companion" by John Ajvide Lindqvist
"Celebrating 20 Years of Lilja's Library (An Afterword)" by Hans-Åke Lilja

My Thoughts:

Vincent Chong does the wonderfully detailed cover which sort of surprised me. I thought this was more a Glenn Chadbourne creation.

My copy did not have the interior art by Erin S. Wells so that must have been a special edition perk.

This was a good group of stories. The one that spoke well and good to me was Brian Keene's, An End to All Things.

Gwendy's Magic Feather

by Richard Chizmar

About the Book:

"Something evil has swept into the small western Maine town of Castle Rock on the heels of the latest winter storm. Sheriff Norris Ridgewick and his team are desperately searching for two missing girls, but time is running out to bring them home alive.

In Washington D.C., thirty-seven-year-old Gwendy Peterson couldn’t be more different from the self-conscious teenaged girl who once spent a summer running up Castle Rock’s Suicide Stairs. That same summer, she was entrusted—or some might say cursed—with the extraordinary button box by Richard Farris, the mysterious stranger in the black suit. The seductive and powerful box offered Gwendy small gifts in exchange for its care and feeding until Farris eventually returned, promising Gwendy she’d never see the box again.

One day, though, the button box shows up without warning—and without Richard Farris to explain why, or what she’s supposed to do with it. The mysterious reappearance of the box, along with the troubling disappearances in Castle Rock, leads Gwendy home again…where she just might be able to help rescue the missing girls and stop a madman before he does something ghastly."

My thoughts:

Love the beautiful blues of this cover by Ben Baldwin.

This was a quick read for me, not only because the story was good, but the chapters were short. I've always had one piece of advice for authors: Keep your chapters short. I don't care if a book is a 700 page monster, keep those chapters short and you will keep me on task with the world you are creating. So, Richard had my complete attention for hours.

I personally thought this book was better than Gwendy's Button Box as we focused on the human aspect of the story. The button box was more a side prop in this tale. I appreciated the smooth skill in which Richard reminded us of important points from the first book as it had been a while since I read that one and had forgotten a lot of it. Dropping necessary information into this story refreshed my memory, not in an obtrusive way but with a subtle hand.

I have never been disappointed in Mr. Chizmar's writing ability. He is a very good story teller.

Thank you so much Kurben for reaching out to me. This means a lot.

It was my new years resolution for 2018 to get these books read and I very much appreciate your kindness in reading what I had to say.

I always love your book reviews. You are so smart and your choices are always ones that you think very deeply about, and then share your passion with us. I want you to know I appreciate your time. When I grow up, I want to be smart like you!
