Sorry - never heard of "Light in August"!
"Light in August" is by William Faulkner. I can't tell if Prufrock is being complimentary or not, though, because I'm not a fan of Faulkner (though I think Mr. King is--there are passages in 'salems Lot that are very Faulknerian) :)

I know what you mean - I did watch the first season and I did enjoy it, but now that I have done a re-read I'm thinking - ooops - now I have messed up the second season for myself. I am still only half way through Under the Dome and I am reading it slowly so I can savour it. Season two doesn't come out until next summer so maybe by then I'll be okay to watch it.
Don't worry, read the book to the end because the series very barely even resembles the book. I mean, the town name is right, it is under a dome, some of the character names are right, some of their jobs are right, but so far, that's about it.

I mean, seriously, I'm expecting some characters from the twilight series to show up....because this tv series is doing to King's story what that movies series did to vampires.....

Yes, before you all dump on me, I realize the series and movies will be different. But how much different? They basically only took the premise from the book and threw out the great story line. This SO reminds me of lawnmower man.....

Anyone remember this little movie called, what was it? CARRIE? Now THAT was an awesome movie made from an awesome book. How about TRUCKS? Another awesome movie adaption of an awesome book. How about 'Salems Lot? I could go on but the movie adaptions of King's books that are good, are few and far between.

I hope, no, I PRAY that they don't adapt 11/29/63 because if they do? They'll probably have the main character not only travelling back in time, but based on a space station on the moon and he won't be going back to save Kennedy, but probably back to save Robbie the Robot from Lost in Space.......

BTW: I didn't realize it until the 10th episode, they are making a comedy! Now it all makes sense! haha

I really liked the book and have been massively disappointing with the series so far - not even one case of necrophilia! At one point the show was going to be a miniseries in Showtime, and I think that would have been a better avenue so the show-runners could tell a story that resembled the events in the novel. I do watch the show with my wife and she likes it for the most part. I keep telling her to read the novel.

I too think if they left it on Showtime it would be better, they'd be able to keep the BS Hollywood corporate types out of the picture. The series has the same look and feel like all mainstream TV for the masses: diluted, no real shockers, pure drivel. The best comparison I can make is like if CBS got their hands on True Blood......

You hit the nail on the head, "tell a story that resembled the novel". The problem is, the story isn't really even the same story as the novel. Some of the parameters are the same, but that's where it ends. It is almost like they didn't even read the book. (kind of like what most of us did for book reports back in highschool before cliff notes).

BTW, one more thing and I'll just shut up, know when I really knew it was going to be garbage? I think it was episode 2 or 3 and there was a scene on the road (I think Duke just died) and Big Jim and the female sheriff were standing by the dome and you could SEE the edge of the acrylic panel they used to simulate the dome....I mean you could PLAINLY SEE IT and they left it in.....they didn't bother to re-shoot it so the edge wasn't visible.

That told me the production value of the series was pretty much non-existent. And don't even get me started on all the takes that made it into the movie that shouldn't have been...the best so far was when Angie/Britt had her seizure in the diner....lol...that just kills me. I'm still laughing about it days later "pink stars are falling pink stars are falling" with her karate kid hands lol...oh man, I have to stop, I'm laughing too hard...hahahhahahahha oh man.....

I really loved the book, at first I wasn't too intrigued BUT after a while I was just reading it whenever I had a spare moment.

I actually started to watch the TV series but I found it rubbish compared to how I'd built up characters in my mind. It started to spoil what I had imagined... Reading the book is so much better, that I would even go as far as saying that there's no need to watch the TV series :/

I absolutely love the book. I am lukewarm at best on the series. Like others have said, you expect some things to change but the whole dynamic of the characters and the feel of the town is way different. I was pretty well bored with the show about halfway through the season, but I trudged along and made myself finish it even though it felt like work sometimes. The show itself isn't terrible I suppose, maybe because I liked the book so well is why I find it so disappointing. I don't know if I will be able to make it through another season or not.

Yes, I know what you mean - let's hope it improves somewhat in Season 2!

I think Under the Dome is one of SK's greatest in modern-years. Very strong characters thrown in a very dire situation that magnified their characters. Huge book, but I couldnt put it down.

thanks for all the warm welcomes!

Mayday, I agree, it was an awesome book that could have been made into an awesome series....I don't know if I'm even going to bother watching the 2nd season....I agree too the last one seemed like work and watching a program shouldn't be like work.

Just thinking outloud, I might watch it, you never know, they've screwed with the story line so much that the decepticons might show up and transport the dome, and the whole town to altair 6.....

It's definitely not going to match the book but what Steve described to me really sounds interesting and now I'm excited about watching it again.

When reading it, I kept thinking it would have made a slam dunk TV series on HBO, AMC, or Showtime. There were whispers of it right after it came out. I talked up the series/book a lot. I had to explain to a lot of people the series was not true to the novel what-so-ever.

Mentioned it elsewhere, but I hung on for 5 episodes, and maybe a 6th half-watching. Just not for me, story wasn't interesting, thought everything is very chintzy/cheesy/poorly done... the hastiness in getting in written and filmed and edited shows IMO. I don't mind deviating from the subject matter, but not if the product is typical network television fecal matter.

I would still like to see a true, seriously done adaptation of the book on a cable station. First The Stand though please.
