Ahhh, M.M--you said 'manual', I love that and I think you're the first US citizen I've heard say this instead of 'stick shift'.
It's 'manual' here for us too. :)

I guess I was taught well by my mechanic . . .once I had to have a clutch replaced and I kept saying 'stick shift' and he kept saying 'manual'. So, I say manual because I have a lot of respect for him, he's taken care of my cars for over twenty years.

A good mechanic is priceless . . .he's been great~ I can count on him --I have for years!
I hear you. I am tired of being told by a mechanic that they have to do some extra special 'repair' work because they can't get the right part- 'it's not being made anymore'- only to find that I can get the part at the local car parts store. Most of them think that the general public is ignorant when it comes to cars. I've had them lie to my face about things on my car and then I get to embarrass the heck out of them when I tell them that they're wrong about this or that. They change their tune pretty quick once they realize that I know what I'm talking about and can't be bamboozled by them! I can't imagine what it would be like if I was female, I know that they totally take advantage of women and it's shameful! When I was young I had my brother-in-law teach me how to fix minor things on cars- I can change brake pads, change the oil, change the radiator fluid, rotate tires, change a flat, change a fuse, replace a radio, lots of things like that. For one thing so that I don't have to pay someone to do something that I can do myself and for another thing so that I won't be taken advantage of my dishonest repair people.

I was a dispatcher for many years and I was in charge of the fleet service. That's how I met my mechanic because I had to shop around for good service for our fleet. And you're right, many of the mechanics are in it to make more money and often they'll tell you that something needs to be replaced that doesn't and will overlooked the things that really should be replaced.

My mechanic services fleets and he has taught me a lot over the years . . .simple things like just getting the oil changed and tires rotated at the proper time will prolong the life of your car. Replacement of hoses and have it serviced for climate changes.

One thing he taught me that is priceless, and this is what he said: "Charlotte, get to know your car . . .turn the damn music off sometimes and listen to it so that when you hear something 'off', you bring it to me!"

I love the guy!

This reminds me of a dumb thing I said once to a mechanic. I had a pickup truck and when he asked where the problem was that I heard I said "It's in the front". duh - well I guess so as that is where the engine is! :grinning:

There was this once, Sharon, the neighbor lady, stopped down at Kramer's for gas. Fall of the year, winter on its way. Her husband, Andy, told her to ask Kramer to perform a task. So after Ed tops off her tank, she looks up at him leaning toward the open window and asks him to put some winter air in the tires. Could you put some winter air in the tires, Ed? Kramer, this grizzled old guy, starts to grin then to chuckle then to outright guffawing, he's bent double, can't get his breath. Sharon's husband was at home sitting at the kitchen table eagerly anticipating her return.

I learned on a manual- way back in the early '60's. High School drivers ed. Car wasn't equipped yet with dual pedals. You'd be getting ready to shift, or break and you'd see out of the corner of your eye the teacher slamming his foot to clutch or break. We learned fast to "anticipate" his moves.
Mechanics- wow, try FL. Am so happy daughter has finally found an honest one.

Speaking of mechanics - I wish I had gone to school to be one - I might yet get around to doing that. They could tell me whatever they want and I'd have to buy it. I finally found one I trust but I put him through the ringer first, and he hung in there with kindness and cuteness. It doesn't hurt that he's a bit of eye candy, even with his multiple piercings and tattoos trying to be all edgy - he's a cutie.
