Just finished the book today. I thought it was pretty good, although it sure took a long time to get to the action. Still, worth the wait I believe. I also enjoyed the Salem's Lot connection and finding out what happened to one of the main characters and others from that book. Looking forward to Song of Susannah. Slowly, this Dark Tower thing is coming together....very slowly.

Not sure how I'd rank them, other than to put The Gunslinger last. I liked Drawing of the Three also, plus I really liked the flashback in Wizard and Glass. Interesting how it's coming together. I don't know how he thought of all this stuff. Every book in this series he drops something that sort of blows my mind.

i need to find the time to reread 'em all, first to last...

my opinion on this one is, unfortunately, not very high, tho...sorry...

best i can say is at least i liked most of this one...but that's a far cry from the out and out love i feel for 1-4 and TWTK...

i stand by my my gut feeling that it, like 6 and, especially, 7, felt entirely forced, oddly unnatural in a way none of the others (save the first and last parts of W&G) ever did...

still...very glad there are many who see it in a different light...

gives my wee heart some hope that maybe i was just having a bad moment...

til then...enjoy every sandwich

I agree, on the whole. Though there were parts that I really liked (and I always love Mr. King's dialogue and characterization), it was very gimmicky. I did like it better when balanced with the things I later learned about the Breakers, but... meh. Same with 6--not horrible, but it felt like filler.

Incidentally, I feel the same ( "gives my wee heart some hope that maybe i was just having a bad moment") way about UtD. I couldn't get into it at all, but so many people love it that I hold out hope it was just the wrong time or the wrong mood.

i get that, there are a few (SK) books i did not like the first time

but i'm finding reading all these comments, both pro and con, makes me at least think giving those same books a second shot...

as a kinda rabid music fan...i was on a site for one of my favorite artists a few years back...and i was offhandedly commenting on how i was not that much enamored with two or three albums made early in that musicians solo career...

some of the posters took the time to talk to me about those albums, how they felt about them...it made me think more about the albums as progressive entries in a longer, deeper musical arc...

it all made sense, i gave them another try and i now count those 3 albums among some of my favorites...

so, you never know what a few years and a bit of maturing'll do, right ?

now...if i can only find the time to read more...

I really liked Wolves. Although I didn't think it was filler, I could see how it might come across that way. For me, Wolves was an opportunity to emphasize the moral integrity of the "modern" gunslinger. Wizard and Glass focuses on the "don't turn a blind eye" theme, too, but it was so much more about Roland's past and what went into the making of Roland as a man.

I just finished Wolves. I am re-reading the entire DT series from beginning to end without stopping (well I guess I have to eat, go to the bathroom, and go to work from time to time...).

I love Wolves. I mean LOVE it. It is the first and only book to ever give me chills while reading. It happened when I got to the ending the first time and everything came together with Roland's plan. It was awesome. I loved it the second time as well. I guess I just love the long anticipation of the Wolves getting closer and closer through the book. It is like a pending doom, like a hurricane out over the water slowly making it way to land and everyone has to prepare for the imminent arrival. I love the townfolk and how he just makes it like a small tight-nit community, like something out of Kansas or Idaho. The whole book is just awesome for me. It is my favorite DT book.

Also a note. The first time I read DOT3 I hated it. I really just did not like it. But this time through I ended up loving it. I don't find it to be my fave of the series, but it was very enjoyable. I don't know what happened the first time through ... ?

I just finished the entire series back to back to back about a month ago. I read them as they came out and waited the years in between and loved them then. I love them all for different reasons even more now that I read them this way.

Wolves is still top of the list for me as I am taking another lap through and just finished again. Its such an advancing of the narative book that really turns the corner and points you straight at the finish line.

You start off with Roland and how hes on this quest. Then he picks up his ka-tet. The wastelands goes into whats wrong with mid world and why it needs saving. Wizard takes you back and shows you why Roland is the mam for job and endears himself to the ka-tet.

Wolves is where they start as the gunsligers and the Tower is in play. I wouldnt recomend it but you could pick up Wolves and read it without the backstory provided in the first 4 novels and it would hold water.

Its almost as if 1-3 are chapters im the first volume then 4 goes into an interlude then Wolves is the first book odlf the second volume where backstory takes a backseat amd here we go for the finish line.
