I am currently reading a book called, The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray by Robert Schnakenberg. In it he says that Stephen King's first choice for the role of Johnny Smith was Bill Murray. Producer Dino DeLaurentiis also wanted bill.

I wonder how that movie would've looked?

(Flake, how did you even read this incoherent post? hoehaoheohae! I got interrupted while writing it and it made no sense!)

Fixed now.

I would've accepted that choice, but to me Johnny was more gaunt and thin. Walken did great in this role.

Johnny had black hair and was relatively tall, I don't see Bill Murray as Johnny. I was thinking, someone like Matt Dillon, but he would have been too young when it was made. Charlie Sheen maybe. I was also thinking that the characters of Johnny Smith and Ben Richards of The Running Man are very similar. I don't know why.

Over the years and after a few viewings it has become one of my favorite SK adaptions. Walken is excellent in it and makes for a very sympathetic character. Martin Sheen is great too. Well done.
Hey everyone - it's election year again. Too bad we can't all see the future like Johnny Smith.

Agreed, however as I said on a post in a different forum, Donald Trump reminds me too much of Greg Stilson. YIKES!!!!

I saw The Dead Zone for the first time two weeks ago with my sister Tina. She is a big SK fan and is so knowledgeable about the books and movies.
I thought Christopher Walken was good in the movie.
I'm not a big Walken fan but I loved him in this. He did a magnificent job.

Eeep... blasphemy. Seriously, for each his or her own. When it comes to Walken, he was the reason I even bothered watching the Dead Zone, he's been a fave of mine since At Close Range. The man can just play so many different characters but sadly, he never won the majority over which is why he ended up doing direct to video films like the Prophecy 3. The Prophecy however, that movie should have done better, it really did a great job with the angels.

As for the tv series of Dead Zone, I like Anthony Michael Hall in Vacation but never cared for him in later films or shows, I also felt the show stretched things too much. The book was one of King's shorter books and the film did a great job at capturing what needed to be captured. Hall also isn't remotely as talented as Walken so that doesn't help.
