Lecter is a good character and I agree that Brian Cox's portrayal is superior to Hopkins. Creepy, yes. He's not the scariest thing I've seen on film though. The first and second attacks in Jaws are the scariest things I've seen on film. Because it's entirely possible for those scenes to happen almost exactly as they were filmed.

My point on the Exorcist is if you put aside the religious overtones, the story is about the corruption of the innocent by an outside force (society, family, etc). That I find scary.

The scene with the dive on the wrecked fishing boat still has the power to make me jump, even after all these years and countless viewings.

I recently saw this on the big screen in a packed theater and everyone in the audience knew that scene was coming and they all still jumped!! Now, that's superior film-making!

I think any movie that is "based on a true story" has a thrill/chill of it's own. Like "Fire in the Sky", "Exorcist", or "Deliver Us from Evil", for myself the thought of really being possessed by a demon scares the daylights out of me, or being abducted by aliens...yep anything based on a true story has my vote people!

"The Entity" was based on a true story (supposedly) and though you never see it, you see its effect on the woman it abuses. It's a good one.

i caught The Babadook a few weeks ago and thought it was terrible... it certainly doesn't live up to the hype.

Top scary movies to my view:

5. Alien. Big rollercoaster ride of a movie. I actually liked Aliens better, but Aliens was an action flick, and Alien was more of the classic horror thing going on.

4. Jaws. I lived in California when this came out. In a beach culture, it actually changed how people related to their otherwise normal activities.

3. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the one with Donald Sutherland. Wow, those expressions and that sound.

2. Halloween. The first of the modern slasher genre, and the best.

And here I must mention The Exorcist, which Grandma would put in her top five; our gracious host's Carrie and for someone else, maybe, The Shining; Arachnophobia, except I considered it as much of a comedy as horror flick.

And for my No. 1:

Psycho. This one changed how people watched movies. No audience before or since has been so involved, so taken in, with screams from their seats as the heroine gets killed halfway in, and even, "No! No!" as the car with her body stops sinking for a moment, and Hitchcock cons audiences into rooting for the villain. And it changed moviemaking as well. Psycho begat many other movies, including the above-mentioned slasher genre, even though no one else ever did it as well, and especially with the shocker at the end. This one stands out as a true movie masterpiece.

"Fire in the Sky" was sooooo scary! Creepy!
I read that those guys never took any money for the story and would never speak of it again.

I think the scene when he wakes up on the ship and then you see a child's shoe floating around is when the scary set in for me!! If I would have been one of those guys you'd have a hard time getting me to step outside :dunno:

When trying to nerve myself up to watch The Exorcist (which I still haven't), I spent a lot of time trying to learn whether anyone actually died from watching this movie and apparently no one did though some people were injured fainting.

One of my high school teachers (I was still in grade school then but this story was years later) told of taking a girlfriend to see the movie of the possessed girl "spitting green all over the screen," then going to McDonald's for Shamrock Shakes. He waited till the girl took a large sip before reminding her and she spat it all over his car.

The end of Paranormal Activity scared the bejesus out of me, and I hadn't even realised it was the movie. I literally elevated out of my seat with a very loud swear, and was shaking for ages afterwards.
