Within this story, I enjoyed how he told the story. Who among us doesn't resist change? I was sitting in a Walgreens waiting for my kids prescription to be filled, and reading the story, thinking, 'Umney is having a really crappy day'.
I also started to understand Umney's disdain for change a lot better as the story went on-it was about self preservation. At first, when he didn't want the blind boy to see again, etc.-I was thinking WTH??!

Self Preservation, I agree. Also, when things stay the same, you know what to expect, there is a bit of comfort in the routine of a routine.
Ladies, just popping in to say how much I have enjoyed this book group. Hubby needed some of my attention so I can't participate in the last N&D story. I've enjoyed spending this time discussing SK storie . Keep me in mind for next book and much thanks to you both.:biglove:

Why thank you for popping in. Our next story will be Head Down. Enjoy your time with Hubby:), thank you for stopping by.:m_adore:

I was chatting about this story to one of the people at work. Umney went through a lot of changes to his world in one day. (Peoria /Frances, finding out he didn't like Umney, and he was leaving, Retirement of Vern, Painting the Hallway from dark to light. Initially, I wondered if Umney may have had Alzheimers,it seemed as if he was reviewing his life.

I initially thought he'd either cracked up or died!

I didn't have a lot of structure or routine growing up. I find the routines I can create for myself now to be of great comfort. But with any comfort, comes the fear of complacency. I never let myself forget how quickly the rug can be ripped out from under my feet.

Lucky you, without the stifling structure. My parents were really big on structure. We did certain things at certain times every day, Lunch at Noon, Dinner exactly at 5:00, Church several times per week, definitely on Sunday... I was glad when it came time to be on my own.
You are so, so right. At any time your life can change in a moment. I think this is another one of Uncle Steve's main themes.

So, with the way the story ends-do you think Umney has a chance of reclaiming his "life?"

No, I don't think he does. Not sure why, but what picture that comes to mind is when you line mirrors up into a continual reflection. The second is not quite as large as the first, and the third is not as big as the second, Fourth isn't as big as the third, and so on. The reflections of each character aren't quite as big as the initial reflection. However, if the character is able to create brand new characters, perhaps he can visit their worlds, but to reclaim his life? No I don't think so. Life is very short, and over in a puff of smoke. I worry about all of the stories that seem to have Cancer as a killer. Don't know why, but it makes me uneasy.

Well Sweet Pea, As always, our time goes too fast. I am pretty wiped. Worked a little extra this evening through the rush, and am ready too hit the hay. ( Why do they call it hitting the hay since we haven't used Hay beds for at least a century?..) Next Week ... Head Down.
I didn't get the sense that he would succeed either, but having a goal gives people something to live for. Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish...
Look at you Chickie... going all Biblical :m_innocent: I'm impressed. Gotta have hope, for sure.
