Keeping it short:
Idris is great. But too intense.
Matthew is wonderful. But too expressive.

Vigo. Think Eastern Promises and A History of Violence and the attahced image from Captain Fantastic.
Controlled within something always beneath ready to pounce.

Roland's aging. His weather and time worn skin. His piercing blue eyes. Think this speaks to Vigo.

I'm not a fan of Viggo as Roland, for several reasons.

One, he's already Aragorn. I'd prefer that whoever plays Roland not bring baggage from another popular role. This is also why I don't like the idea of Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman or Christian Bale in the role. The general public think this way: Craig = Bond, Jackman = Wolverine and Bale = Batman. And Mortensen = Aragorn. If any of these guys get cast, the general public will talk about "that new movie where Aragorn/James Bond/Wolverine/Batman plays a cowboy".

Two, he's nearing 60, which means that while he'll look okay in the part now, I doubt he will in even five years, and it will take at least that long, if not longer, to film the entire series.

Three, that voice. It's so high and reedy. Am I the only one who thinks Roland's voice is a deeper baritone than that?

Four, he just seems so conventional a choice. After an actor gets mentioned umpteen times as a potential whomever, I start to automatically want someone else. That's probably just me, though.

...any reasonably talented actor/actress can become identified with a certain role...that by no means indicates they can't break that typecasting i.e. Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Robert DeNiro etc....Roland is hundreds if not thousands of years old...65?...big whoop...voices can be trained and electronic manipulation can add quite a dimension to voice work...one other thing-he's proven he can be a bad ass as well as gentle, so he still has my nod, for what that's worth....

There's having a role that got you fame, and there's the public perception that you ARE that role.

Sean Connery was dogged by James Bond throughout his career and never really stopped being thought of as Bond.
Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones and Han Solo to most people. He's probably the only one that carried off TWO iconic roles. It helps that the two didn't cross genres.

I want whoever plays Roland for that to be his iconic role.

Also, Roland may be centuries old, but he likely doesn't look any older than a hearty, hale 60 at the very oldest. I see problems casting an actor who's already 60 for the first film. It just seems like he'd be too old to go the distance.
