If you do seek out training, try to find an instructor who includes handgun retention as well as targeting. Knowing how to keep someone from taking your handgun is very important also. Most handgun battles take place at five to ten yards, which means you have less than two seconds to assess the situation, bring your weapon to bare and fire before said bad person can close that distance, just something to consider ma'am. Stay safe.
This is definitely the kind of training I'll need. My natural clumsiness/awkwardness is the reason I haven't purchased a handgun yet.

Through that, as ghost can tell you, you will lose the natural and sensible fear of the power of the thing in your hand. Confidence with the weapon is about 99% of it. Also, practice, practice, practice. Like anything the more you do it, the better you get.

Also, you shoot with your heart.... :)

If there's an IDPA group (Int'l Defensive Pistol Association) near you, they're a good resource for classes and training. IDPA training and competition focuses on real life home invasion type scenarios and their instructors are very good in my experience. They have training for night time shooting drills, shooting from cover inside your house, as well as drills for escape and evasion. It's a lot more realistic than just standing on the line blasting stationary targets. If you need any info feel free to PM me ma'am. I'll be more than happy to assist, even a Tar Heel fan...;)

1. What is your favorite brand of peanut butter? Jif

2. Have you ever seen a shooting star? Yes

3. Do you have a credit card you've never used? No

4. Do you like your neighbors? Some very much, others I could take or leave. The guy who works on cars in his garage and blasts death metal, for instance, I wouldn't mind trading him in for a different neighbor.

5. What is the biggest attraction in your town/state? I guess beaches, although I don't think they're that great.

6. How old were you when you went to your first funeral? Maybe 10?

7. Have you ever received an awful haircut but didn't tell the hairdresser because you didn't want to hurt their feelings? No.

8. What's your favorite John Hughes movie? Who is John Hughes?

9. Do you believe in Bigfoot? I'm totally neutral on Bigfoot. There could be something out there, just based on the volume of sightings, but it doesn't matter to me either way. Ghosts, on the other hand, really fascinate me.

10. What is the most afraid you've ever been? That is tough, because I have a tendency towards anxiety, and that can upgrade the fear/dread factor from 0 to 10 in an instant. I think it would have to be when I witnessed a terrible car accident involving my grandparents when we were visiting them in Florida. I was 14, and I still remember the adrenaline rush had me literally shaking for hours. (There were some injuries, but none too serious.)

7. Have you ever received an awful haircut but didn't tell the hairdresser because you didn't want to hurt their feelings? My father used to take me every six weeks to this Italian born barber(because my father liked Europeans) who had pictures of topless women on the wall of his barber's shop. I get a crewcut every six weeks. Sharpie.
sharpie
Sharpie: An australian youth subculture which existed rougly between the years of 1971-1979, that is, for most of the 1970's. They were most prevalent in Melbourne but grew to encompass both Sydney and Adelaide. They were different from the majority of youth at the time as they wore neat clothes and generally had short, neatly trimmed hair. They were a unique Melbourne subculture who wore clothes and shoes made by local tailors and shoe makers and listened to local rock & roll bands such as Lobby Loyde's Coloured Balls, Buster Brown, Hush, Skyhooks and AC/DC. They hung out around shopping centres and were itimidating in both their appearence and mannerisms. Eventually the sharpie era effectively came to an end with the advent of disco and the fact that it was almost a requirement that you grew your hair longer so you would be allowed into clubs.
"sharpie, sharpie, sharpie!"
