Weekly Survey September 3rd/4th to September 10th

1. How many vehicles have you owned in your life (if you drive)?
Over 10

2. Which do you prefer - dyed hair or au natural (for both guys and/or girls)?
On me, au natural - way too lazy and cheap to color. On other people, yall can get down however you get down.

3. Do you use throw away (disposable) or rechargeable batteries?
Both

4. Is # 4 the most boring question you've ever been asked?
No.

5. Do you do your income taxes on time and if so do they owe you or do you usually owe them?
Last minute, the feds owe us, but we owe the state.

6. Have you ever taken a parking or speeding ticket to court and won?
Yes.

7. Would you hire a maid service to clean your house if you could afford to?
In a New York minute.

8. What was the last thing you cooked that you were proud of or turned out really good?
Homemade completely from scratch using no recipe veggie burgers. The seven year old diva had seconds.

9. Have you considered buying or making Christmas gifts this year or is it too soon to ask?
I buy gifts all year long, random stuff that strikes me. Toss it all in a box that I pull out at Solstice and allocate. And I also crochet (poorly) small dodads for everyone. On Amazon I also have a full cart of books for giving.

10. Do you like to post in the Politics thread?
I do not. The 2016 election gave my husband a heart attack - literally - so I'm done with political debate.

Regarding the answer to # 10 - sorry to hear about your husband's heart attack - hope he's okay now!

Okay all, here is the weekly survey. Must be complete by September 18, 2017. There is an answer key so I'll try to get your scores posted soon thereafter.

1. When is the last time you've been embarrassed?
Even though I regularly do embarrassing things, I can't recall any recent mortifications.

2. Who was your first crush?
Celebrity? Michael Jackson (we're talking the "Thriller" era).

I like so many. From 1920/30s luxury cars, to 60s Jaguars, to 80s MB, to newer Jeep Rubicons.

4. Who is your favourite historical figure?
Good question, can't think of a good enough answer.

5. Coffee or tea? If not, then what?
Tea

6. Have you ever pulled a practical joke on someone? If yes, details.
I can't give details (kinda gross + you had to be there) but got my hubby good recently.

7. Do you encounter beggars on the street and, if so, do you give?
Not where I live.

8. Where you live, do you rent or own?
Own.

9. What is your favourite thing to wear?

10. Why do you like the SKMB?
The people. We have all these different personalities, cultures, experiences, but we all agree that SK writes some bloody good stories.

Regarding the answer to # 10 - sorry to hear about your husband's heart attack - hope he's okay now!

He's coming up on his first "But did you die?" anniversary in November. He's ridiculously healthy and health conscious. While he was still in the hospital all i.v.'d and backless gowned, the cardiologist is telling him, "Your numbers are GREAT! Wow! You are really healthy. Well, except for having a heart attack, but still!"

Word to the wise:

If you find you are constantly unable to get a full, good night's sleep, and your sleeping buddy tells you that you breathe weird in your sleep, and sometimes weirdly stop breathing and then startle awake, go get check out right the frick away.

Sounds a bit like sleep apnea - my partner/husband is up North so there is no one to tell me if I breathe funny in my sleep :culpability:

Yeah, I was convinced he had sleep apnea. But drilling out that right coronary artery and installing a stint was all he needed to get a good night's sleep.

Oh, and if you find you wake up multiple times during the night, every night, feeling like you're about to have an asthma attack - yeeeeaaaaaah you might wanna get that checked out.....

The weird thing was that he didn't get short of breath doing his usual activities. Stairs? No problem. Weightlifting? Nailed. Long hikes up tall mountains? Got it!

The only symptom he had were sleep issues.

Well shucks, so much for copying & pasting the questions. =D Here goes:

1. Last September I was on vacation at a small nature resort. It was during non-peak visiting times, so I had an outdoor Jacuzzi to myself, a five-minute walk from the beach, adopted a giant African snail that would be outside my cabana at night, and had breakfast at the pool-side while birds would fly up to my table to steal the sugar. Plus a hammock for reading. Ah, bliss.

2. New Year's Eve. Not fond of the fireworks and other related noise.

3. No. It's all bad.

4. Seldom happens, so I'm kinda neutral towards it.

5. No.

6. The kind that's easy to push aside so you can get to the main course on the table.

7. My incredibly monotonous jobs. Them bills ain't gonna pay themselves, unfortunately.

8. There are many shows I love, but as long as I have my books, I can live without TV.

9. At my third job where I was the IT Administrator at a medium-sized retail firm, my MD gave a mandate that everyone be computer literate, regardless of their job (be it Admin Assistant or forklift driver). I busted my tail coming up with training programmes and exams, and stayed back on my personal time to get the training done and made sure everyone passed their exams. There was one guy (he drove one of the company vans doing deliveries) who just couldn't quite get there because he didn't have much schooling and was embarrassed that his colleagues would find out. I used to stay back to coach him. It took some doing, but the poor guy really made an effort so I didn't want him to get discouraged. A few years later this really clean-cut guy approached me in a mall and it took a while before I remembered him. He told me that the time I spent with him at that old job made him realise that he was capable of more than just driving a van, and now he owns his own laundry service. That made me realise that it's really the little things you may overlook which make a difference to others.

10. Oscar Wilde, if you want to appreciate the beauty of the English Language. Also, tales from the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson, because everyone needs a little magic sometimes.

1. Listening to the mourning doves. My hands were freezing in my pockets and from the porch I saw the brown crinkled leaves appear through the snow like chocolate corn flakes submerged in milk. The two spare tires leaning against the house were powdered donuts. The cooing was warm, somehow, and calming in the cold lavender and smoke cloud sky.

2. Usually, dental appointments.

3. I will watch when I can but not often. It's exhausting trying to keep up with what's real and what matters...I'll leave it at that.

4. I don't mind but, like most people, I don't like people being condescending.

5. No.

6. I'm going to make a chicken, mushrooms, and wild rice soup soon. I like many kinds of soups/stews. I like a simple Cobb salad with lots of croutons and bacon with honey mustard dressing.

7. Yes, repetition is hell. I believe in a literal hell, too.

8. I haven't watched cable for about a month. I could go without Netflix for a week, I guess. I'd need some other fulfillment and entertainment besides reading, though. Again, repetition is hell, ha. Gotta switch up things.

9. I wrote a piano instrumental for Lewis Meriwether. I'm proud of the two short stories I wrote recently, too.

10. All Quiet On The Western Front. It doesn't glorify war but it makes one appreciate the sacrifice our military makes to ensure our freedoms. They literally are the thing standing between us and the enemy, giving their own life if necessary. The book is miraculously not depressing and it's beautiful without sermons and the words pierce the reader like shrapnel. I can't praise it enough.

1) Hanging out with my family this weekend. The power in half our house was out (since remedied), but before Mark could get it fixed, he just made sure essential power was okay: heater, fridge, stove, etc. Since the bedrooms were dark, everyone gathered in the rooms that had light/power. It was nice--we had a lot of laughs! Brought home how much electronics create isolation, even within a big family in a small house.

2) I dread Christmas Eve. We've traditionally gone to my in laws, and it's miserable. Mark and his brother and sister barely speak, the cousins pretty much loathe each other, my inlaws clearly favor the other grand kids... miserable. It's usually up to me, my SIL and my BIL (the other 'married in' ones) to keep conversation going and keep it neutral.

3) No

4) Depends. If it's my mom or husband, it's okay. Most of the time it sounds false or demeaning from anyone else.

5) Nope

6) Soup: French Onion Salad: Spinach with red bell pepper, cucumbers, carrot shavings, sliced almonds, blueberries, maybe a little cheese or meat (depends if it's a side or the main dish)

7) My favorite bishop once said that hell would be looking at yourself and only yourself forever (like in a mirror). I suspect he meant looking inward, but have you ever looked at yourself for a long time in a mirror? As time goes on, you look more and more alien. It's creepy. I think he's right.

8) Forever

9) Hm. My marriage, my kids, and my books. Getting one of my students from kindergarten level reading to grade level (3rd grade) last year.

10) Might I have a few? Non fiction: (For Americans) In Our Defense, Caroline Kennedy and Ellen Alderman. Great explanation of what the bill of rights does and what it does not do, using modern case law to illustrate how the amendments were tested. For everyone: Amusing Ourselves to Death (Neil Postman). Very insightful look at how culture has been dumbed down over the last few decades. Fiction: Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry). You want to examine the human condition? Pretty much every permutation of behaviour, cause and effect is encompassed in this book. It's also beautifully written.
