These are Steffen ’s answers so you can more easily read them with the questions.
1. What were you doing when you last felt a sense of peace and contentment?
Last September I was on vacation at a small nature resort. It was during non-peak visiting times, so I had an outdoor Jacuzzi to myself, a five-minute walk from the beach, adopted a giant African snail that would be outside my cabana at night, and had breakfast at the pool-side while birds would fly up to my table to steal the sugar. Plus a hammock for reading. Ah, bliss.

2. What annualevent/holiday/happening do you dread, and why?
New Year's Eve. Not fond of the fireworks and other related noise.

3. Do you watch your local news? If so, what’s good and bad about it?
No. It's all bad.

4. How do you feel about people using terms of endearment when talking to you?
Seldom happens, so I'm kinda neutral towards it.

5. Will you watch the winter Olympics? If yes, what’s your favorite event?
No

6. What’s your favorite soup and/or salad?
The kind that's easy to push aside so you can get to the main course on the table.

7. In Storm of the Century, SK said,“Hell is repetition. (I agree.) What do you think hell is?
My incredibly monotonous jobs. Them bills ain't gonna pay themselves, unfortunately.

8. How long do you think you could go without watching TV/streamingprograms?
There are many shows I love, but as long as I have my books, I can live without TV.

9. What is something you created or worked for, of which you were especially proud?
At my third job where I was the IT Administrator at a medium-sized retailfirm, my MD gave a mandate that everyone be computer literate, regardless of their job (be it Admin Assistant or forklift driver). I busted my tail coming up with training programmes and exams, and stayed back on my personal time to get the training done and made sure everyone passed their exams. There was one guy (he drove one of the company vans doing deliveries) who just couldn't quite get there because he didn't have much schooling and was embarrassed that his colleagues would find out. I used to stay back to coach him. It took somedoing, but the poor guy really made an effort so I didn't want him to get discouraged. A few years later this really clean-cut guy approached me in a mall and it took a while before I remembered him. He told me that the time I spent with him at that old job made him realise that he was capable of more than just driving a van, and now he owns his own laundry service. That made me realise that it's really the little things you may overlook which make a difference to others.

10. What book do you think everyone should read and why?
Oscar Wilde, if you want to appreciate the beauty of the English Language. Also, tales from the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson, because everyone needs a little magic sometimes.

And here are Doc Creed ’s.
1. What were you doing when you last felt a sense of peace and contentment?
Listening to the mourning doves. My hands were freezing in my pockets and from the porch I saw the brown crinkled leaves appear through the snow like chocolate corn flakes submerged in milk. The two spare tires leaning against the house were powdered donuts. The cooing was warm, somehow, and calming in the cold lavender and smoke cloud sky.

2. What annual event/holiday/happening do you dread, and why?
Usually, dental appointments

3. Do you watch your local news? If so, what’s good and bad about it?
I will watch when I can but not often. It's exhausting trying to keep up with what's real and what matters...I'll leave it at that.

4. How do you feel about people using terms of endearment when talking to you?
I don't mind but, like most people, I don't like people being condescending.

5. Will you watch the winter Olympics? If yes, what’s your favorite event? No.

6. What’s your favorite soup and/or salad?
I'm going to make a chicken, mushrooms, and wild rice soup soon. I like many kinds of soups/stews. I like a simple Cobb salad with lots of croutons and bacon with honey mustard dressing.

7. In Storm of the Century,SK said, “Hell is repetition. (I agree.) What do you think hell is?
Yes, repetition is hell. I believe in a literal hell, too.

8. How long do you think you could go without watching TV/streaming programs?
I haven't watched cable for about a month. I could go without Netflix for a week, I guess. I'd need some other fulfillment and entertainment besides reading, though. Again, repetition is hell, ha. Gotta switch up things.

9. What is something you created or worked for, of which you were especially proud?
I wrote a piano instrumental for Lewis Meriwether. I'm proud of the two short stories I wrote recently, too.

10. What book do you think everyone should read and why?
All Quiet On The Western Front. It doesn't glorify war but it makes one appreciate the sacrifice our military makes to ensure our freedoms. They literally are the thing standing between us and the enemy, giving their own life if necessary. The book is miraculously not depressing and it's beautiful without sermons and the words pierce the reader like shrapnel. I can't praise it enough.

skimom2 ‘s answers.
1. What were you doing when you last felt a sense of peace and contentment?
Hanging out with my family this weekend. The power in half our house was out (since remedied), but before Mark could get it fixed, he just made sure essential power was okay: heater, fridge, stove, etc. Since the bedrooms were dark, everyone gathered in the rooms that had light/power. It was nice--we had a lot of laughs! Brought home how much electronics create isolation, even within a big family in a small house.

2. What annual event/holiday/happening do you dread, and why?
I dread Christmas Eve. We've traditionally gone to my in laws, and it's miserable. Mark and his brother and sister barely speak, the cousins pretty much loathe each other, my inlaws clearly favor the other grand kids... miserable. It's usually up to me, my SIL and my BIL (the other 'married in' ones) to keep conversation going and keep it neutral.

3. Do you watch your local news? If so, what’s good and bad about it? No.

4. How do you feel about people using terms of endearment when talking to you?
Depends. If it's my mom or husband, it's okay. Most of the time it sounds false or demeaning from anyone else.

5. Will you watch the winter Olympics? If yes, what’s your favorite event? Nope.

6. What’s your favorite soup and/or salad?
Soup: French Onion Salad: Spinach with red bell pepper, cucumbers, carrot shavings, sliced almonds, blueberries, maybe a little cheese or meat (depends if it's a side or the main dish)

7. In Storm of the Century,SK said, “Hell is repetition. (I agree.) What do you think hell is?
My favorite bishop once said that hell would be looking at yourself and only yourself forever (like in a mirror). I suspect he meant looking inward, but have you ever looked at yourself for a long time in a mirror? As time goes on, you look more and more alien. It's creepy. I think he's right.

8. How long do you think you could go without watching TV/streaming programs?
Forever.

9. What is something you created or worked for, of which you were especially proud?
Hm. My marriage, my kids, and my books. Getting one of my students from kindergarten level reading to grade level (3rd grade) last year.

10. What book do you think everyone should read and why?
Might I have a few? Non fiction: (For Americans) In Our Defense, Caroline Kennedy and Ellen Alderman. Great explanation of what the bill of rights does and what it does not do, using modern case law to illustrate how the amendments were tested. For everyone: Amusing Ourselves to Death(Neil Postman). Very insightful look at how culture has been dumbed down over the last few decades. Fiction: Lonesome Dove (Larry McMurtry). You want to examine the human condition? Pretty much every permutation of behaviour, cause and effect is encompassed in this book. It's also beautifully written.

1. What were you doing when you last felt a sense of peace and contentment?
That’s a tough one...
2. What annual event/holiday/happening do you dread, and why?
Christmas. There’s always a sense of melancholy that has always surrounded the season for me.
3. Do you watch your local news? If so, what’s good and bad about it?
Yep. I like to keep up with local sports and I’m always looking out for stories about the PD I used to work for, crime beat stuff. Bad part is there’s a lot of useless filler garbage stories on our local news channels.
4. How do you feel about people using terms of endearment when talking to you?
Always felt a little weirded out by it. I’ve always used “sir” and “ma’am” when addressing people so hearing someone call me “honey” or something like that outside of my fiancée is just kind of strange.
5. Will you watch the winter Olympics? If yes, what’s your favorite event?
I really like the Winter Olympics, much more than the summer ones. Downhill slalom or the biathlon are my two favorite events, and the bob sled.
6. What’s your favorite soup and/or salad?
Campbell’s Cream of chicken soup and probably smoked chicken salad from one of our local BBQ joints.
7. In Storm of the Century,SK said, “Hell is repetition. (I agree.) What do you think hell is?
Shopping...lol
8. How long do you think you could go without watching TV/streaming programs?
I don’t know. I watch pretty much exclusively streaming tv other than football nowadays. I could go a few months if I had to I’m sure.
9. What is something you created or worked for, of which you were especially proud?
It sounds boring as hell but back in 2008-2010 I went to crime analysis mapping and training classs for two years give it take to get certified in predicting and analyzing crimes. What I though was going to be boring as hell ended up being the most challenging and interesting certification process I’ve ever gone thru. It was fascinating what statistics reveal and learning how to use them to solve crimes. I was very proud after I took the final exams and received my “Alpha Group Certified Crime Analyst” ranking.
10. What book do you think everyone should read and why?
The Dark Towe series. It doesn’t get any better.

Thanks, danie ! I did love your handwritten questions - I wish I had my handy dandy handwriting analysis book handy. You've got very nice, steady, strong writing. And in pencil? I love it. I might copy your idea. I think it's a great share.

1. What were you doing when you last felt a sense of peace and contentment?
Sitting outside on the patio with the fire pit blazing one day last weekend - roasting marshmallows with the Ogre and our youngest. For a minute I knew where everyone was, we were all OK.
2. What annual event/holiday/happening do you dread, and why? Right now - Jan 31st on the horizon - which I am nearly finished with: W2s, 1099s, donor letters, explaining how benefits work to everyone, changing of the file system, all the festivities leading up to Lent. It wears me out. By Ash Wednesday I've had it - I'm ready for six weeks of down time.
3. Do you watch your local news? If so, what’s good and bad about it? Yes, every morning for the weather and traffic. The scooping of bad news - the sky is falling - "everyone be skairt!" that goes on with the media makes me roll my eyes every morning. It's appalling what they try to throw at us at 5am.
4. How do you feel about people using terms of endearment when talking to you? I love it, and I do it myself when speaking to others - "sweetness", "sunshine", "Love", "precious", "stinky". My Ogre doesn't use them at all. But his two closest friends do - they call me "sweetheart" "darlin'", and I love it. However, when they are talking about me - they don't. Once I had to pick my husband up at one of their homes because they'd spent the day drinking and watching football and no one was in any shape to be driving. I knocked forever and finally Mike comes to the door and says: "Oh hey, Sweetheart!" and then shouts "Hey, Rick - yer old lady's here"! :angry_002:
5. Will you watch the winter Olympics? If yes, what’s your favorite event? Yes, can't wait. Figure skating is the best! These two are so exciting to watch
Vanessa-James-and-Morgan-Cipres.jpg
6. What’s your favorite soup and/or salad? I love soup - pretty much all soup. I think I will agree with skimom2 - French Onion is the best. Costco has a salad I love - it's baby spinach, cranberries, boiled eggs, onion, bacon, grape tomatoes and shredded mozzarella with poppy seed dressing -YUM!
7. In Storm of the Century,SK said, “Hell is repetition. (I agree.) What do you think hell is? I like skimom2's answer again. Maybe being stuck in that loop of regret, self hatred, misery-something like that. The opposite of love and peace.
8. How long do you think you could go without watching TV/streaming programs? Forever. I watch some shows sometimes but if there's something else to do - I'd rather be doing it.
9. What is something you created or worked for, of which you were especially proud? Our kids - they're definitely flawed individuals - but they don't judge, they have integrity, they work hard at school and their jobs, they will make the world a better place. Our marriage - of course, almost 27 years and I still get happy when I see him at the end of the day. Me personally, something about me?? - I can't figure it out. But you got me thinking.
10. What book do you think everyone should read and why? Ga - I don't know. I read for entertainment - but I always come away with a different perspective on something and knowledge I didn't have before. I just think everyone should read - a little something everyday.

1. What were you doing when you last felt a sense of peace and contentment?
Sunday, lying in bed, reading a good book that suited my mood exact, with a glass of something at the nighttable and a bag of cashewnuts to nibble on from time to time. I did not get out of that bed until the force of nature forced me.
2. What annual event/holiday/happening do you dread, and why?
I dont think i dread holidays at all actually. I live alone and i dont have to go to someone i dont want to go. I usually enjoy the extra free day even if i cant share the sentiment, like easter for instance, so i get along. The worst is probably the sumer and winterparties that the work gives. You are supposed to dress up to them and i feel silly in a custume (dressed for a funeral i think (which otherwise are the occasions i wear it on)
3. Do you watch your local news? If so, what’s good and bad about it?
Listen to radio at work to keep track of how the buses are doing, if they are on time or not. otherwise not so much.
4. How do you feel about people using terms of endearment when talking to you?
A bit strange... The ones that used to do it regularly (my wife, my mother) are dead now but several other relatives show it (My father never said, as i can remember "i love you" or something like that but he showed in actions that he did very much) which i like.
5. Will you watch the winter Olympics? If yes, what’s your favorite event?
The Icehockey event and then i hope that Charlotte Kalla will take a gold for sweden in crosscountry skiing and beat the norwegians that are considered favourites!! So i probably watch some but its at an awkward time here in sweden.
6. What’s your favorite soup and/or salad?
Greek salad, Chicken soup.
7. In Storm of the Century,SK said, “Hell is repetition. (I agree.) What do you think hell is?
Eternal boredom which repetition leads to in the end so i guess SK has got it right.
8. How long do you think you could go without watching TV/streaming programs?
Heck, i got my books.Leave me a library and i'm fixed!
9. What is something you created or worked for, of which you were especially proud?
The Cultural History Guide i made for Botkyrka municipality. I divided that big area in 40 sections and told the most important points in each section complete with pics and maps. Still used by the inhabitants as tip for excursions and teachers for education. Totally my baby so i'm really proud over it. Available on the net still.
10. What book do you think everyone should read and why?
Just one.... Come on!! If it is for everyone it ought not to be too long... Lord Of The Flies by Golding. Its not too long but goes real deep in how thin our civilisation really is. Great book. For the sheer adventure, tragedy, homour and wisdom of Watership Down it should be appraised as the timeless masterpiece it is. So Golding and Adams gets my vote.Sorry, no american..

1. What were you doing when you last felt a sense of peace and contentment?
Reading.
2. What annual event/holiday/happening do you dread, and why?
My birthday. (I just spewed up half my lunch)
3. Do you watch your local news? If so, what’s good and bad about it?
I don't have a television
4. How do you feel about people using terms of endearment when talking to you?
I don't mind. I don't mind if women call me 'darling' or 'dear' or whatever.
5. Will you watch the winter Olympics? If yes, what’s your favorite event?
If I had a television( i got rid of it because most of the shows a junk, I hate reality shows, I miss some of the game shows and documentaries but you can see them on the internet. If I watched the winter Olympics I'd watch the ice hockey and some of the skiing.
6. What’s your favorite soup and/or salad?
Chicken vegetable soup. Also I love tomato soup so you can dip the toast in it.
7. In Storm of the Century,SK said, “Hell is repetition. (I agree.) What do you think hell is?
Not being able to feel the way you want, and hence the frustration. Also, being in an abusive relationship.
8. How long do you think you could go without watching TV/streaming programs?
Forever. I only watch DVD's, I choose to select what I watch, I don't get brainwashed anymore.
9. What is something you created or worked for, of which you were especially proud?
I haven't achieved anything.
10. What book do you think everyone should read and why?
I don't know. I'd say a King book, Pet Sematary, also history books. I'm reading presently 'The Fury of the Norsemen' by John Marsden. Marsden says in the intro that he refuses to capitilise 'Viking' as they were just glorified pirates. He lambastes the Vikings for destroying all the monasteries like on Lindesfarne and Iona.

4. What is the most important thing to remember about getting older?
Everyone seems grumpier and young people have lost all morals and 'back in my day when we had morals young people respected older people and we had to go to church every Sunday.' As you get older you see things through 'rose coloured glasses." Having said that I think that cell phones have a lot to be answered for.

'I don't remember him'

1. Name one thing about which you feel really passionate. Just one? The importance of listening to kids, really listening. Not waiting for your turn to talk, not interjecting a moral or lesson, not drifting within your own mind. Just listen.

2. Is there something you said you’d never do, but you do now and love it?
Own a cell phone.

3. What is the most interesting thing you have on display in your home? To me, books. No idea what might interest someone else!

4. What is the most important thing to remember about getting older? It's better than getting deader, and that's the only alternative.

5. If there were an “After School Special” about your life, what would the title be? (For those who aren’t familiar: ABC Afterschool Special - Wikipedia) Why the H**l Did You Say That?

6. Pancakes or waffles? Why? If I have to have one or the other, pancakes. They're quicker and less oily. Not a big fan of either, though.

7. On a long car trip, you stop at a Welcome Center. What snack do you buy from the vending machine? Sunflower seeds, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and a Coke

8. If you could have any work of art in your home, which would it be? Include a picture, if you can. I love a sculpture called Adrift. I'm a sculpture fan.

9. Recommend to me a great book which takes place in the 1800s. Lonesome Dove (McMurtry), These Is My Words (Turner), Alcott's books, the Little House Books, My Antonia (Cather), North and South (Elizabeth Gaskill not John Jakes, though come to think on it I liked that one a lot, too), Cold Mountain (one of my favorites), The Killer Angels, Property (Valerie Martin), Mrs. Tom Thumb,...so, so many more.

10. Describe your comforter/bedspread. Pretty simple: Down alternative, sage green on one side and pine green on the other.
