I always imagined Viggo Mortensen - though now that you mention it Tery Hugh Laurie might be very good if he could act it well. I tried some other series he did after House and I just couldn't get it - but you never know if that's the writing, the plot, the director or bad acting. He's got those dreamy ice blue stoic eyes.
I have mentioned him but some argue that he is too old, if anything I'd love for him to portray Roland now!

Jeffery Dean Morgan
Viggo Mortensen
Keanu Reeves (Unconventional, I know)
Ryan Reynolds
Tim Roth

Sean Penn would make an excellent Flagg
I agree with all of those apart from Ryan Reynolds. Tim Roth is a really good choice. I do think Sean Penn would make a good anything. How about Denzel

I don't know if Hugh Laurie is menacing enough though. He could prove me wrong.

Did you see Hugh Laurie in the Night Manager? He was menacing.
He's perfect. He is Roland. The "bombardier blue eyes" the gruff voice. Which he could use with an American accent until he has to speak High Speech, when he could go to British.

I've been behind Hugh Laurie as Roland for years. Please Casting Directors, hear my cry!

I also think of Roland with longer hair but. Maybe I need to hear his American accent first.

I can see Denis Quaid as Roland though he may be to old now.

Also think of Dennis Leary though I dont see him as physically imposing enough he has the weathered down cowboy past his prime look.

And more importantly Edward Norton as Walter.
I wouldn't mind an older Roland, a grizzled Dennis Leary might be good though.

I've been on board ever since you proposed it. My only concern is that he'd appear too sickly if he didn't hit the gym. (The last time I hit the gym, it hit back. Like the song says, you don't pull on Superman's cape and you don't mess around with gym.)
Maybe I should watch the film you mentioned to get a better mental image. Still a great choice, I think.
