I saw on the news tonight that PBS and The New York Times have started a book club called Now Read This. They choose a book every month and ask everyone to read it and discuss it on their facebook page. The authors will be joining the discussions. The first book is Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward (I've had this one on my radar). Anyway, I just thought I'd share that in case any of you want to read along. Sounds interesting.

This book sounds interesting. Have you read any others by Ward? Salvage the Bones looks good too.

Thank you. I love book clubs like this.

Yes, I was one of the ding dongs that participated in Oprah's book clubs. I was losing my mind.

Somebody was abused. Somebody was molested. Somebody was mentally ill. Somebody was on drugs. Somebody died. Somebody lived. Somebody breathed. Somebody was a dwarf.

gah! I couldn't take it anymore.

Sounds like fun :hammer:

No, I haven't read any of her books yet. The PBS Newhour did a story on her a couple of months ago and I have wanted to read one of her books since then.

Finished Prose Edda--very interesting! It made me laugh the way the author started by tying Norse mythology into the Christian mythos, but by mid book dropped that tack and just jumped right into storytelling. :)

I read a couple of kids books that I'm teaching next term, one horrible (The Chocolate Touch)--I wish I'd read it before I decided to use it for book club, and one very good (The One and Only Ivan). Now I think I can finally settle down with Sleeping Beauties!

Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones.

It’s one of those novels that is so exquisite, so poetic, so hard-hitting, that it makes me want to put down my writing pen forever.

:biggrin2:

Cody - did you watch the PBS Newshour interview with her that I posted? It's an awesome interview. I didn't know who she was and I was googling her as soon as the interview was over. I'm planning on reading Sing, Unburied, Sing next (after Dolan's).

I'm on an Agatha Christie kick right now. We saw Orient Express over Thanksgiving and I realized my daughter hadn't read any AC books yet. We are remedying that now and sharing thoughts as we go. Quite fun! We're currently on A Hallowe'en Party featuring Monsieur Poirot!
I get these urges sometimes too!! can read 5-10 in a row when the mood strikes me. Because they are neat, cozy, wellplotted and, in a undefiniable way, very charming books. Right now i'm taking a break from Genghis khan (he has just defeated his main rival among the mongols and become their khan and is now about to attack the chinese) and have started reading The Moving Finger, a Miss Marple story and a favorite of mine.

Finished the political book and have started on Schindler's List. I found a TPB at the thrift store last weekend and had never read it so thought I'd try. I saw the movie once and have never been able to watch again so I'm hoping I can make it.
I cannot get the image of the red coat out of my mind and this is after years of seeing it when it was in the theater. Very powerful film.
