Yeah. Big disappointment in my opinion. The authors name is David Lagercrantz. He was commissioned by the brother and father of Larsson to milk some money out of the characters. He has also written a fifth book in the series which i probably wont read. His partner, the woman Larsson lived together with for many years was very much against it (she had more than a finger in Larssons writing) but was neglected. I agree the first is best, the second is a little let down while it gets better again in the third though not as good as the first.
Thanks for the background info. I just found out today there's a 5th book. I'm sure I had seen it before, but I'd forgotten about it. From what I've read, Lisbeth isn't a prominent character in the newer novels, which is a bummer.

Loved the LeGuin book, particularly one of the essays where she talks about the difference between 'telling a story' and creating a narrative. She was an interesting writer, with wide ranging interests.

I picked up one called Carrion Comfort (Dan Simmons) at the thrifty--has anyone read this one? I think I remember hearing good things about it, but I'm not sure. Vampires call to me-lol.

I also checked out Annihilation--I've heard mixed things about this one, but it sounded pretty good.

In my view Carrion Comfort is Simmons best book. Can be recommended. better than The Terror, Better, A Winter Haunting, Better than that book similar to It; Summer something?? Annihilation is new to me. Had not heard about it even. Whos writtenit? And not surprised about LeGuin. She was a very insightfull person. Isn't it a pity she is no longer among us. I always thought that if any SF writer ever gonna get the Nobel it ought to be her. Now its too late.

I think the main problem is he does not "get" Lisbeths character. When she act she does not act like Lisbeth anymore. Plus he does not write as good as Larsson. or even like him. He was mainly a documentary writer before, writing popular biographies and factbooks and you can see that. He does his homework well, i'll give him that but when he trying to transform it to a narrative it just limps along, not the flow you want. Also he dont get the paper Millennium, he is centered around Blomqvist.

Annihilation is the first of a series, written by Jeff Vandermeer. I checked out the first and third books, and I'm waiting for the second to be available before I start them. A friend read them and said they're good, if a little weird.

Last night I was back at the library (what a mistake!) and checked out the second and third American Vampire books, a non fiction book called Nomadland, about the numbers of Americans who have never recovered from the 2008 crash and live out of vehicles, doing odd jobs. Interesting so far. I also got a book of 50s comics that were banned. It has the issue that Mr. King talks about in Danse Macabre, where the baddie baseball player ends up as guts and parts on the field!

Carrion Comfort is, as Kurben said above, Simmons best novel. This book is a hard one to classify as he mixes a bunch of genres together. Mostly it's a horror tale, but there are also aspects of suspense, sci-fi and the good old chase novel all blended together. I can pretty much guarantee you will never forget the last line...... This is the novel that got me started on being a huge Dan Simmons fan!! Also- abit of trivia: this book started out as a short story which Simmons submitted to Ellen Datlow for publication (she was thrilled with it). Datlow told Simmons that it was a complete story and couldn't be expanded into a novel. Guess he showed her, eh?

Finished Hominids. Turned out it was the first of a trilogy, the others being Humans and Hybrids. The first was interesting enough for me to be on the lookout for number two. Started two other books, Homo Britannicus by Chris stringer (a fact book about the different human types that have lived in England since the first find there 700.000 years ago). Interesting. Also The Lost World by Crichton (i have seen the movie but actually never read the book, will be fun).

The Lost World was okay--nowhere near as good as Jurassic Park.

I read Island of the Blue Dolphins today, the first time since I was a kid. I burst into tears at one part, totally unexpectedly. I'd completely forgotten large chunks of the story. It's a lovely book.

I saw the movie when I was a child and sought out the book after. I still have the copy I bought at age 10. It's one of my favorite childhood stories.

Although I have not done it yet, I'm thinking I'll go to my local library and request that book recommended by ghost19 - One Second After by William R. Forstchen

Got an email saying I have to renew my library card :joyous:
It was a really good book! Hard realities mean some emotionally difficult scenes--be aware, if those turn you away from stories. The sequel was just 'meh', though.
