Ice - Ed McBain

I've never read an Ed McBain book before so I am fixing that.

Doc Creed - Do we have an SK discussion coming up at the end of this month or am I hallucinating?
Answering for Doc July 23- The Green Mile/ July 30 Long Walk.
Hey, fellow weirdos. Meet me on The Mile, E Block, next Tuesday for our discussion of The Green Mile. There'll be plenty of cornbread (Mrs. Edgecomb made it) and all the moon pies you can eat from Toot-Toot. All no-shows have to ride the lightning. ;)
Tuesday, July 23rd at 8e/7c.

The Woman In The Window by A. J. Finn. Author's first novel. I know I'm behind the trend on this one because it was published a while back and was a bestseller. I'm liking it so far. Shades of The Girl On The Train, but this one is set in the US. Stephen King liked it and wrote a blurb for it. So did Joe Hill.
The articles I've read about the author could be a novel themselves. He's been accused of plagiarism and lying his way up the ladder at major publishing houses. It's all very strange.

No. As a matter of fact, I can't even think of any similarities between the two. But now I want to try because it sounds like a fun game! :)
Doc Creed do NOT read the spoiler, it is for morgan
Only thing I can think of is his ability to see smoke in the eyes to mean death-- is that a form of "shine". ?

Operation Breakthrough by Dan J. Marlowe and Clint Eastwood by Richard Schickel( I noticed the actor Kathy Bates is to appear in an upcoming Eastwood movie. I've read one of his biographies before. Eastwood is a fan of the jazz guy, Charlie Parker. In the book it says Eastwood went with some friends to see him live in San Francisco. My father said he saw Parker live in San Francisco as well, maybe at the same venue. Also, in the book it says that when they were making Rawhide, Eastwood asked for a chair between takes because he had twisted his ankle and came back and there was no chair and he complained and he and the assistant director got in a fight, and the AD attacked Eastwood, and Eastwood knocked him out.)

I'm almost finished with Spindle's End (Robin McKinley). I've been reading her books her and there this summer, as a break from school and professional-type books. Nice, easy fantasy. I'm also plowing through the Amber series (Roger Zelazney) again. Haven't read these since junior high, but I found myself thinking about the first one so picked them up again. One observation: WOW, did the characters smoke a lot! They're literally lighting up 2-3 times on every page. I hadn't realized how rare it is to mention smoking in books anymore until reading this throwback book.

Two I recently read that I think you guys might like: for the 'people books' folks- Have You Seen Luis Veldez (Catherine Ryan Hyde). I was sent this for review (which I'm not doing much anymore), and picked it up just to look at it before sending it on to someone else. I ended up inhaling the whole book in two days. My apocalypse/dystopia peeps: The Last One was an absorbing book about a woman who is on a Survivor-type show. While she and the other contestants are out in the boonies, a wild virus sweeps the nation and wipes out something like 70% of humans. I really enjoyed this one. Can't say the same for The Power. Atwood praised it, but I found it to be an overrated and overwrought faux "gurl powerrr" story. It pandered to a certain audience but had no substance.

I have had a bunch of e-books on hold from my library for weeks and of course they all came back at the same time late last week. So before Friday I am speeding through 5 books. Done with 3 so far. ;)

Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Not what I was expecting. It's written in an interview format and just shortly after I read The Dirt (Motley Crue) so it had that kind of a vibe. I liked it but felt it lacked something, just not sure what.

Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult - This was quite good and well written as most of her books are. Unexpected twist that I did not see coming was a nice surprise.

The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo - I enjoyed the story but it was a little wordy.

If She Wakes by Michael Koryte - Yay!! Been waiting on this one and just got started. Looking forward to another great read.

Next up, One Day in December by Josie Silver.

P.S. Thanks skimom2 for the reviews. Adding both to my TBR pile.

Still chuggin' along with about four titles and I started two other books, The Moon and Sixpence by M. Somerset Maugham and The Running Man by Richard Bachman. I'm getting frustrated with The Magus by John Fowles because, even though the mystery deepens, the lethargic plot makes me want to give up.
Have you tried a Michael Koryta book?

I read a good bit of The Ridge a couple years ago but was too invested in other books to return to it. Sadly, it got shuffled into a box of paperbacks that I was trading for credit at the book store. If I go back, I'm going to look for The Cypress House or the other title everyone speaks of so highly.
