So I get back from Doc Yankmolar to find a heavily bound parcel in the postbox. Got so many books in transit it’s a surprise when I tear the package open to find...

Wait for it...

Airboy Archives vol. 1, written by Chuck Dixon, art by Tim Truman, Stan Woch, Tom Yeats. This is some seriously badass early 80s (late Bronze Age) topshelf independent comics reading fun, cats and kittens, created by some seriously talented folk. Those names above should ring true to anyone who dug good gory 80s comics like Conan, Scout, Swamp Thing, etc. This was put out as a full color bi-weekly by the long defunct (and eternally mourned) Eclipse Comics, who revived the unique golden age character just as Marvel had done with Cap. Back from past also are Airboy’s wild supporting cast, like Skywolf, Iron Ace, the Flying Dutchman, the sexy Black Angel, and the even sexier Teutonic spitfire Valkyrie. Oh, and the Heap—comics’ first ever shambling, muck-encrusted Swamp-mockery of manhood. I had all these back in middle school, packed like sardines between Mr.Monsters and Twisted Tales. Anybody remember that bitchin Dave Stevens cover of Valkyrie? Achtung, baby!

So there. I win. I get first pick of the doughnuts, Jimmy...

Civil War by Peter Ackroyd. A history of the interesting but rather unfortunate Stuart Kings of England and their time. Even if it was a time of unrest politically speaking it was also the time of John Donne, Francis Bacon, Isaac Newton, Inigo Jones and many others. It saw the foundation of the Royal Society where scientists met, discussed and proposed new ideas in every science. Mayflower sailed for America and England managed to stay outside the 30-years war that devestated the rest of europe. But they were influenced, it seems both the puritans and their opponents picked up many of their arguments from abroad. And of course to the Killing of a King. Nothing to be so proud of since he was replaced by a dictator, Oliver Cromwell. The Lord Protector. It is just the title thats different. He had even more power than Charles I had had before him.

I'm currently doing a course on Scottish history, we have just went past the sixteenth century, I would recommend you search a guy called Montrose, he was the commander of the royalist forces in Scotland and single highhandedly drove the Cromwellian forces out of Scotland, he won six battles in a row, widely regarded as one of the best generals in history. We're just going on to the Jacobite revolts, which of course surrounds the house of Stuart. God bless King James!

Still plugging along on The Institute. About 3/4 of the way through. I'm just not 'into' this one. Sorry Steve. I have to finish it quickly though as I have Find Me, the sequel to Call Me By Your Name coming today.
With his output, your bound to get a few not so good ones, I don't think much of The Outsider, sorry Papa King.

Essential Fantastic Four vols. 1 - 5. Got em fer peanuts. Reprints the entire run up to issue 110, including every damn issue Jack Kirby ever did. Gonna take the whole journey, starting from the beginning—at the dawn of Marvel’s Silver Age. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s officially clobberin’ time.

Flame on!

Edward III,s son who gave the french a very bad start on the 100-years war through his victories in Crecy and Poitiers. Sadly for the english he died young and never became King in an illness a year before his father. His name was Edward so he would have been Edward IV. Instead his son Richard became King, Richard II, and he was not exactly a chip of the old block. Interesting book about a character well worth knowing more about.

Not really a big fan of the Edward line myself, Edward the first is universally hated in Scotland, this might give you an idea why, his unofficial nickname (which he ended up getting put on his official name) was 'The Hammer of the Scots.' He invaded Scotland numerous times and tried to declare himself King, but like any English army that has attempted to invade Scotland, they ultimately get ran out by the people. You should research Henry V if you are interested in the war with the French, he was the commander at Agincourt, there is actually a film on Netflix about him called 'The King,' but its not very good, although, the battle at the end (Agincourt) is great.
