I just finished it, it was.... Strange, to say the least.
It was interesting, if not a little uncomfortable to read a 1st person account of an unknowing descent into insanity.
It will stay with you for a while if not forever. Something will trigger a memory of it one day and you'll get a chill. It;s an amazing piece of literature.

It's also a great work of feminist literature. The real insanity is how suppressed the main character is by her husband and other women, chastising her for trying to be creative, think & write just because she is a woman.

Before The Play - Stephen King (extra material in the CD special edition of The Shining)

I liked this quite a bit but if Steve ever thought about including it at the beginning of The Shining, I think he made the right decision by cutting it. This is great to read after you've read the book but I think it would have slowed the beginning of the book down and considering you get glimpses of the history of the Overlook throughout the book, this part wasn't crucial to the novel. But I do like it.

I think I read this when it was featured in TV Guide during the week The Shining miniseries was airing. It is all Overlook history, isn't it?

What about After The Play? Have you read that part yet? That part was considered lost until a collector stepped forward with an original manuscript a year ago. Steve didn't even have a copy of it! :O_O:

I didn't know this.

(This is apropos of nothing we're discussing (well, maybe a little) but it just popped into my mind: does King still stay in contact with his old pal Chris Chesley? He used to be an early reader of his pre-published stories.)

No, as soon as I finished Before The Play, I started reading the novel again. I haven't got to the stuff in the back yet.

Okay then. That's alright. I ordered the Artist edition and the signed edition and Cemetery Dance is apparently not going to ship my Artist edition separately (even though I paid separate shipping for it) so once the tray cases are in their hands they will ship out my order. So, here I am foaming at the mouth, waiting to read the only part of the book that I have never read before....:ohnoes:

From what I understand the version in the TV Guide was slightly abridged. I never actually sat down and compared this version with the one that appeared in Whispers magazine way back when, so I can't tell you for sure what is different.

I was going to read all of the extra stuff and wasn't really planning on reading the novel again but Before The Play sucked me right in to reading the novel again. Steve has a way of not turning me loose. ;-D

Never heard of either of these, I feel like I'm missing out and need them now!

You should be able to find that issue of TV Guide on ebay. I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it. I would venture that at some point the edition containing both of those missing parts will be available, like they did for the edition of 'Salem's Lot that had all the missing pieces placed at the back of the book in a separate section.

I picked up Skeleton Crew to refresh my memory about The Mist - I couldn't get into the show at all. And I ended up reading a few others, and right now I'm reading The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet. I love that story so much. It's always been a favorite - speaking of descents into madness.

I'm trying to think of King stories and novels set in the summer. Do you recall any? I thought The Raft was, but no - it was cold. Maybe Mrs. Todd's Shortcut?

80sFan I have an ARC of The Given Day - I'm ashamed to say I never read it. Time got away from me and I never picked it up. I absolutely loved and could not put down Shutter Island by Lehane. Hope it gets better - I'm counting on your opinion to tell me if I should read it now.
