About halfway through The Girl with All the Gifts - very good so far! It hooked me in almost immediately. (If I remember correctly, within the first 15 pages.) I haven't been reading as much and it makes me sad. Working on turning that around!

Checked out another book from the library - The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. I'm sure many of you have read it because SK gave it a rave review. :)
This is one of my all time favorite books! I loved it! It's a great story.

I second what KRF said. This book reignited my love for reading and made me fall in love with the north woods of Wisconsin. Morgan, you'll be smitten, too, by the fictional Sawtelle dog breed that is the lynchpin of this reimagining of Hamlet. I look forward to hearing your progress.

For her SF The Left Hand Of Darkness, The Dispossessed and The Word For World Is Forest. The last of these three is more of a novella. All are very good. To taste her fantasy best the best starting point is The Earthsea trilogy: A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs Of Atuan and The Farthest Shore. They are more of YA really but good YA. Its her SF thats special to me.
Thank you!

I just started a Kindle sample of The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. I read Kindred a while back and liked it so I wanted to delve into what Butler is really known for, science/speculative fiction. I believe it was MadamMack who recently posted about Butler and was the impetus for me to read more of her. So far I am really liking this dystopian tale. The main character is hyperempathetic and since I have always considered myself to be an empath I am loving this aspect of the story. The novel also deals with religion and the title is taken from one of Jesus' parables, which just happened to be the Gospel reading at church last Sunday. I thought it was fate that I should read this now.

That's my favorite by her.

Has anyone read Octavia Butler's Fledgling? I forgot I checked it out a couple of weeks ago and found it in my library bag, so I started it, but I dunno. The protag is a 53 year old vampire that looks 10/11. The problem for me isThe writing is lovely, but I'm not sure I can get past that. As I was reading, my husband asked me, "What the hell are you reading? You have the worst look on your face!"

So I guess what I need to know is if anyone else has read this book, and if it continues in this vein (HA!). If so, I'm probably finished and will move back to Children of Men.

{EDIT} MadamMack , Spidey just reminded me that you're a Butler fan. Have you read this one, and what did you think?

Still working through The Children of Men (now that my mini summer vacation is over, I have less time to read). I like it quite a lot, though it's not as direct as the movie. More side journeys and asides, but all well written. MANY good quotes that I need to post on Doc Creed 's quotes thread!.

Hi all!
Long time since I have been on here, I always seemed to try and pop on during one of the seasonal breaks it seems!

Anyhow, I hope you are all well.
I have read quite a few since I was last here, a reread of IT (ready for the new movie, the trailer looks gooood), the Abarat trilogy by Barker, Gwendy's Button Box (short but sweet) and a failed attempt to read American Psycho.

Currently reading "The Silent Corner" by Koontz.

....Koontz has himself another long running character on his hands....looks like a total of 4 if not more titles in this saga......
