Besides" Mr. Mercedes" which I have been trying to read, but work has been interrupting my free time. I downloaded on audio (when I do some mindless work at my desk) "The Devil in the White City" It's about the serial killer during the construction of the World Fair. It's a true story.
I read the biography of H.H. Holmes, the serial killer in The Devil in the White City. I liked it, even though it was very short.

I remember wanting to read The Devil... but for some reason never downloaded it. I think I will now!

OK, I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I am reading a "chick lit" book called Emily and Einstein by Linda Francis Lee... and I actually like it! I met this author at a dinner party a few weeks ago and she was charming. We chatted all night about writing, the publishing industry and other such things. This book was only 2.99 for Kindle, as she has another book coming out this week; it is called The Glass Kitchen. Meeting this author really changed my mind about what I assumed a chick lit author was like. Ms. lee is very intelligent, well educated and an extremely nice person!

But did you give her directions for a short cut to her home? :icon_eek: (shades of Big Driver....)

DAng! I need to start the very first one! It's here, I have it. So many books!
I need to get started on this Series too. I've borrowed the first 2 books. It's kind of like the DT series for me. Everyone says: read it! You'll love it! But I've been dragging my feet. I don't know why I put it off.

I'm almost finished with Firestarter. It's been very good. When I'm done, I'm going to make the kids watch the movie with me. I've never seen it.

I have read Gabaldon too but have to put in a less enthusiastic opinion. The first is great but i think she loses a little speed in the rest of the books, At least after a couple of books. What makes the first so good is that there is a lot of good, strong and interesting secondary characters. The more the series goes on the more of the load lies on the central characters. The Secondary characters get weaker and less interesting than earlier. This is not meant as a bad thing. It is rather natural i think. She writes good with a sense of homour. The books are good but no one in my opinion is really close to the first one. Still, they are a good read and really enjoyable because she can write but i think she should put an end to the series and start something fresh. That would really be interesting!

I've been getting into Walter Mosley a lot. After SK & Anne Rice, he's my favorite author to read. Anyone who likes SK's straight detective/mystery books like The Colorado Kid, Joytown and Mr. Mercedes should give him a try, especially his Easy Rawlins, Leonid McGill, and Fearless Jones series.
I absolutely loved his The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey.

I keep looking at that one at our library--it really does look interesting

I watched two different documentaries about him on Netflix--weird, creepy, insinuating guy!

Hey, some of us rely on people taking a chance on chick lit ;D lol

Really, there are some very good books out there, and as a genre it is not the same as your mamma's bodice rippers. Chick Lit (more kindly called Women's Lit) is more about relationships and life choices than sex or fantasy (though those can occur).

I like the term "Chick Lit" - sounds like gum - which is sort of like what romance books are - something to chew on for a little while until you get tired of it.
