This isn't exactly a recommendation but it is what i'm reading. I was so tired and jumpy after work for some reason. None of the books on my list seemed to want me read it. not even King. So i went to my little shelf of books saved from my youth, picked three The Three investigfators books; Mystery of the Silver Spider, Stuttering Parrot and Fiery Eye and started to read. Now i feel much more relaxed and are beginning to think i will sleep after all. That old trick always work, what luck that you have some of the oldies left to get at in moments like this. Sigh...!

I like to read young reader books sometimes - especially the ones that I loved when I was young. Comfort reading, like comfort eating.

Gone South - Robert McCammon

This was $1.99 daily deal last week on Amazon so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did. I'm a little more than half way through and am having a hard time putting this one down. In the intro, McCammon talks about how depressed he was when he wrote this because he was trying to branch out and write more than horror and his publishers were not being very cooperative. They would not promote his previous book Boys Life (which he feels was his best to that point) or this one very much. His state of mind at that time parallels the main character. He went 10 years before he published his next book.

almost done...quite nice...wasn't so sure at first, was looking forward to a sequel to 'ravenous'...but this one started so off base from where that one ended...slowly, garton pulled it all together for one nifty little thriller...
I like Ray Garton. Have you read his Live Girls yet?

There was a time when Rick wasn't treated very well by the publishing industry. I'm very happy that he stuck with it and didn't let the b*stards make him give up. He's a great storyteller!

I agree Holly,I have several books that I have kept with me, or have purchased reprints of,from my childhood.. And I agree there's something comforting about rereading them at times..a good book, is a good book..:grinning:

hi, KRF...nope, haven't gotten to 'live girls'...yet...but am looking very much forward to it

i have it on my kindle , so it is most definately on my list...

the only other garton i'd read was 'ravenous': i was feeling very i'm-missing-gary-brandner-right-now-ish...and it, from the cover blurb seemed like a GB type of thing...

thanks for asking

Now that you mention GB, Garton does remind me abit of GB, but I think Garton goes alittle bit further with pushing the limits.

Have you read American Gods, the first book of the 'series'? Both are good, but I liked that one better.
Yes, I read "American Gods" and "The Graveyard Book" in 2011. They were my introduction to Neil Gaiman. I bought "Anansi Boys" and "Smoke and Mirrors" at a bookstore last fall, and put "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" on my Kindle awhile ago also, because I did like those first two reads and always intended to read more by him. I like his stories and characters a lot...so imaginative and beautiful writing.

Ocean is one of the best books I've ever read. He'll find it hard to top that one. I thought Smoke and Mirrors was interesting, especially the Snow White story.
