Season 5 of House of Cards dropped on Netflix today. Took in the first 2 eps. It's great watching President Underwood terrorise his own country, although given the current political state in... er, maybe I'll be quiet now.

Good Saturday afternoon! I'm having a fine old time over here watching

The Handmaid's Tale

Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.

(Hulu Plus, 8 of 10 episodes with the last two showing on following Wednesdays.)

Shots Fired

A small North Carolina town is turned on its head when a black police officer kills an unarmed white college student. As tensions rise along lines of race, the neglected murder of a black teen is brought to light, reopening old wounds. Investigator Ashe Akino and Special Prosecutor Preston Terry lead the Department of Justice's inquiry into both shootings, pulling back layers to reveal a possible cover-up that appears to involve some of the state's most powerful people, including Gov. Patricia Eamons, whose re-election fight is made tougher by the incidents.

I'm alternating between the two. I'm going to watch episode 3 of Shots Fired next and then onto episode 3 of The Handmaid's Tale. =D

(I have iced tea with lemon and a beautiful fruit melange. Yay!)

Have a great day.

Oh.Em.Gee.

I just finished episode three of The Handmaid's Tale. This show is ...downright horrifying. I'll take the zombie apocalypse anytime. He11, throw in flying vampire dogs, satanic children and nails on chalkboard with the zombies and it would be less horrific than this series. (I could have sworn I read the book long ago but I'm sure I haven't. Yet. I would NOT forget this story.) (Crud. Even if I binge watch all eight episodes today and tomorrow the last two episodes don't show until upcoming Wednesday. Ack.)

Shots Fired, episode four is next. :) I have cherry, grape, and orange flavored Popsicles!

Finished Shots Fired and liked it.

Just finished watching

Love & Terror on the Howling Plains of Nowhere

In an isolated, high-plains community, a brilliant mathematics professor disappears from the local college without a trace. Three months later his body is discovered tied to a tree and burned beyond recognition in the remote hills south of campus. Iconoclastic author Poe Ballantine searches for clues related to the case while reflecting on his own life of wanderlust.

(Streaming on Hoopla)

I liked it but it's...different.

(Suicide by immolation is very rare-usually a political statement- and tying up oneself before lighting the flame? And that the wick effect is used to explain the condition of the professors remains is very interesting IMO.

The wick effect is the name given to the partial destruction of a human body by fire, when the clothing of the victim soaks up melted human fat and acts like the wick of a candle. The wick effect is a phenomenon that is found to occur under certain conditions, and has been thoroughly observed. It is one commonly offered explanation for the alleged phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion (SHC).

I watch weird stuff, huh?

I'm off to watch more strange stuff. =D

I'm going to try to watch some of season 5 this weekend. I'm thinking I like Claire as the villain more. Women can be very...

Good evening!

I finished Shots Fired. I liked it very much but it can be sobering and uncomfortable. I don't want to say too much.

I watched two episodes of Downward Dog. Yeah, the dog talks. >.<
It's okay. It may get better it may get worse but if you just want something plain and simple (like me!) it's good for a smile.

Right now, nothing but Atlantis and rewarding Buffy. I watched the first 5 Handmaids, but have lost interest as it has strayed from the source material.

Hey there, good looking!

Are you enjoying summer break? (Do you have summer break?)

I've only watched the first five episodes. (It was gnarly. Seriously.) So, I shouldn't watch the rest? I was going to wait for next week so I could binge watch thru until the end. :(

You may like Shots Fired (Hulu the entire season is available)

Hugs!

I haven't watched past ep 5 myself. I might watch the rest this weekend, though. I absolutely loved the first 3, but thought they jettisoned too much of Atwood's social commentary in favor of leering at the weird sex. There were other things that bothered me, but I won't go into it here :)

I'm going to take a look at Shots Fired tonight -- thanks for the rec!

Are we going to watch OITNB?

(I need to read a recap of season four, before.)
It starts tomorrow, doesn't it?!! It will take some doing (don't have the TV access I used to have) but I will definitely watch it when I can. I usually have to recap the last episode of the previous season too, but for some reason, I completely remember the last one!

London Spy (British mini series that is available on netflix) Ben Whishaw

I really liked this one. The show is complex and I was having a hard time trying to find a concise way to describe it so I copied this summary off of Wikipedia.

London Spy begins as the story of two young men: Danny (Ben Whishaw)—gregarious, hedonistic, and romantic—falls in love with Alex (Edward Holcroft)—asocial, enigmatic, and brilliant. Just as they discover how perfect they are for each other, Alex disappears. They lived very different lives: Danny is from a world of clubbing and youthful excess; Alex, it turns out, works for the Secret Intelligence Service. Danny decides to fight for the truth, utterly ill-equipped to take on the world of espionage.

The spy part of the story gets a bit implausible towards the end but it doesn't really matter. There are so many interesting sides to this tale that some implausibility can be excused.

I like watching good British TV on the streaming services and I've seen the actor Ben Whishaw in a few shows and think he is an awesome actor. He was Q in the Daniel Craig Bond flicks.

Has anyone watched The Shack ?

After suffering a family tragedy, Mack Phillips spirals into a deep depression that causes him to question his innermost beliefs. Facing a crisis of faith, he receives a mysterious letter urging him to an abandoned shack in the Oregon wilderness. Despite his doubts, Mack journeys to the shack and encounters an enigmatic trio of strangers led by a woman named Papa. Through this meeting, Mack finds important truths that will transform his understanding of his tragedy and change his life forever.

Sounds like a wrist-cutter/feel good movie. (I don't like this type of movie. I get stuck on the wrist-cutter part. )

I was thinking about getting my sister-in-laws together to watch this movie

And then I saw the Red Band trailer and yeah. This is a movie you can watch with your girls when you want to be goofy. (The Red Band trailer is definitely not suitable for the SKMB. Look it up yourself. It's audacious!)

40 Year Old Virgins (Netflix)

Two virgins, a 29 year old woman and and a 40 something year old man, take steps towards intercourse get intensive sex therapy in the United States.

This was very interesting and sad.

Catfight (Netflix)

The rivalry between two former college friends comes to a head when they both attend the same glamorous event.

This was funny if shocking at times.

Blue Gold

Documentary on blue jeans. Very interesting IMO.

I'm off to watch OITNB. Yay!

Have a great evening!

Just finished ATLANTIS (Hulu). The first season was fun, if a bit 'kiddie', but the second season was very absorbing! Not for the Greek mythology purist, as it plays fast and loose with characters and traditional storylines. I love the myths, but a good story is a good story :) Wish it had gone on longer.

I also watched IN DEFENSE OF FOOD (Netflix) this afternoon. Michael Pollan is one of my absolute favorite food writers, and I've read this particular book three times. The documentary is very interesting!
