I think EJ might have linked you to it... but here's a little word from their (not) sponser:

It is a fantaaaaaaaaaaaastic show and the lead character (no spoilers) is I'm-pretty-sure, my favourite character ever. So far anyway.
I hope you can watch it!

Curon (Netflix)

This is an Italian mystery/fantasy/thriller. It's not totally horror probably, but it comes close often. The subject is something that has been used in horrorfilms and stories, even by Edgar Allan Poe.

I would say in a horrorfilm there are two kinds of suspense. One occupies usually the first half of a story: strange things happen, what is going on? The second is: how are the protagonists gonna deal with what's happening and how do they survive?
Sometimes the first is skipped altogether, like Night of the Living Dead, where from the first scene it is clear the dead are rising. Of course there remains the question how could it happen, which is never fully answered in this case.

This show is very good at the first kind of suspense. It is mysterious and intriguing up until the point when it starts to become clear what's going on. It unfortunately doesn't manage to keep the second kind of suspense interesting. In the last few episodes it moves in familiar patterns and very little surprising happens anymore.
It is shot in the beautiful environment of Curon Venosta which really exists in the north of Italy, on the border of Switzerland and Austria. The top of the belltower that's submerged by the lake that is a central image of the series really exists, however it is never made clear what it has to do with it all - it is a series of course, so that's probably left to a later season.
So visually it always looks nice, and the actors are mostly interesting and likeable, but it's a shame it doesn't manage to stay interesting til the end.

Twin Peaks (Season 1): An eccentric FBI agent comes to the small town of Twin Peaks and teams up with the local police force in order to solve the murder of a 17 year old girl. I’m surprised at how much they managed to put in 8 episodes, never a dull moment. I greatly enjoyed how both compelling and odd it was. I’ll get around to watching the much longer second season in a week or so.

A fantastic and very funny (and a little vulgar) show. I guess I would call it a historical comedy. I'm not done with it yet so I'm not exactly sure how far it goes but It is about Catherine The Great and her years before she became ruler of Russia in the 1700s. Catherine wants changes like art, a printing press, education for women and to end Russia's wars. Since Catherine and Peter have no children and Peter has no brothers (except a young one that they hide and don't want to become emperor), Catherine is in line for the throne if Peter dies. So what I've watched so far is about Catherine positioning herself to take over and trying to keep from getting pregnant. The costumes are great and the cast is superb. Nicholas Hoult is hilarious as Peter.

Highly recommended.

The first season is great, the other seasons ... not so much.

The Pale Horse (BBC)

This is a nice very short tv-series - only two episodes. It looks very stylish (as BBC productions now often do).
It is based on Agatha Christie but it doesn't feel at all like a typical murder mystery. There are murders (people on a list who get killed off), but there is not that typical 'circle of suspects' or a highly intelligent detective who solves it all.
It has also a very strong folk horror vibe (little corn dolls, and a parade at a festival in a small town with local people wearing masks and holding effigies in ancient tradition).
Not everything is tied up nicely at the end, and the solution of the mystery is a bit farfetched, but as a whole it feels like a nice old fashioned kind of series, the way they don't make them often anymore.

We were loving it, and then I just got bogged down in the continuing drama. I cannot praise it highly enough, but it just went to continuing intrigue where I didn't want to go. Grandma still watches it.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Amazon Prime. We're probably not caught up on it from Prime picking it up from Showtime or wherever it gets it. But a hilarious and brilliantly written series. You won't find more packed writing anywhere. Enjoyed it first show to last available.

I think kingricefan is a huge fan of this show. Something David Lynch oriented was filmed near his home too (don't quote me on that - my old brain. Ach!).
