What if the person buried there was evil to start with? Would they come back as good?

The Wendigo just kind of lived in the forest, I don’t think it was directly the reason for the burial ground having powers

According to this the powers of the burial ground are due to it being cursed by the Wendigo:

Wendigo (Stephen King)

I can't remember exactly though what was said about the Wendigo in the novel. If I get around to it, I'll see if I can look that part up.

Mostly what I can find on the Internet says the Wendigo was directly responsible for bringing the dead back, like here:

The Great Stephen King Re-read: Pet Sematary

Apparently there was also a moment when Louis sees the Wendigo on Gage's face. Can't remember that myself.

Do you think the little girl from Night of the Living Dead could be the inspiration for Gage? There’s a lot of similarities including stabbing their mother to death plus George A Romero and King being buddies, so it doesn’t seem to far off the mark.

Gage is probably based on King's own son Owen.

I feel it falls under the "sell your soul to the devil" context. You get what you want but at great cost and buyer beware.

Part of me feels the spirt in the forest was not the wendigo but something trying to stop people from carrying out their plans. Jud had to tell Louis how to ignore what he saw or heard and show him how to climb the deadfall and pass through the swamp. He passes on the secrets which are the key to making it to burial ground. Louis on his own would never make it but he had his spirit guide in Jud.

When he goes back with gage the spirit uproots a tree and leaves craters all the more time trying to stop him without being able to over match the power drawing him to the burying ground. And something is sending visions to Ellie probably because she was the only one not to write them off implausable the way Louis tried so hard to do the morning after his walk with Pascow.

Again for every evil there is an opposing force of good.

The ending reminds of af the tell tale heart except its the beat of burial ground that Louis keeps hearing in his head and its keeps drawing him back to do its bidding.

Also can see the groundwork for "IT" being layed.
