I've been reading King for 38 years, but only decided to take on "The Dark Tower" Series in the last couple of months. Having just finished "The Wastelands" and the first three chapters of "Wizard and Glass" I can't help but wonder if King actually took his five and a half year hiatus on the series before writing "Riddles" or if after he had, opted to end "The Wastelands" early with a cliffhanger.

I've spent some time googling and did not come up with anything. I can't be the only one with this thought - has anyone taken it further?

The cliffhanger in The Wastelands wasn't an afterthought. He ended it as it is in the book and then picked up five years later to write Wizard and Glass.
