he certainly writes scenes that are intense. but things never feel outright gratuitous. we're dealing with malevolent entities, supernatural, human, either way, these are not nice people/monsters/demons/etc. people do pretty awful things in the non fictional sense all the time, and while reading a scene in a book depicting these kinds of things can be uncomfortable, if it's well done i'm usually able to get past it.
