Is this the one that didn't have a proper ending? Just got cut short.

it is, the original series was supposed to be continued but apparently CBS decided not to produce the series. Even though the story is still incomplete, it's still much better than the highly condensed version that various websites are trying to sell!!

Hi Ms. Mod, Inquiring minds need to know...how much money was spent to use that song (Golden Years) as the theme. Also, are deals like this a one shot payment, whether the series lasts for 6 months or 6 years; or, is it a per episode fee? Thx, Mal
I don't know if that's something I'm allowed to say publicly so will err on the side of caution and not. I still have a ways to go before my retirement date. ;) I didn't see the actual contract but my guess is that the rights were bought both for the entire original production and any residual distribution, not a per episode fee.

I understand the home video version changes the last few minutes of the final episode to give the story an optimistic ending. I have Golden Years on DVD but haven’t watched it. I wonder if it has the cliffhanger ending or the optimistic ending. I guess I'll have to watch it... the final episode, anyway.

Thanks Ms. Mod! Don't ever let them say life's taking you nowhere! :) Thx, mal

Hi Dio!! The series was left open-ended in case it got picked up again. (It didn't) The ending on the dvd/video does indeed have an alternate ending to what was shown on network television, but I'll leave it up to you whether you think it's a happier ending or not....:p

....as have I...in dog years, at least 400....

haha....cat years for me! I'm not really a fan of dogs but I love cats!

Actually the reason why I came here yesterday was to try to find a good copy of Golden Years that was not the condensed version. I used to have a copy that I recorded when CBS aired it in 1991. But a few years back, I lost it during a move. I've found some good ideas in this thread, thank you!

I've watched this series so many times I probably know it almost as well as Stephen King himself! They used to have it at Netflix but they don't have it there anymore either.
