One of my friends is a big fan of the movie, and told me that the theatrical version is a bit shorter than the version that was put on tv a while ago, and that they had added a bunch of scenes to it, and yet they haven't released that version of the movie on dvd/bluray.

I figured I would come onto the forums here and ask for him. Has anyone heard as to whether the extended version of Needful Things will ever get released on dvd/bluray?

I really, really, really want to have the longer version in my collection! I'm sure there's enough fans out there who want it also.

Here's a comparison of the two versions...

Thanks for the thread :) I did not know there were two different versions.

That was interesting :) I've only seen the TBS version. TBS shortened Natty's dog's demise scenes (I actually wished they'd removed the entire scene). And TBS also censored Natty's and Wilma's fight. The differences between the parking tickets is pretty funny too lol. I need to order the dvd :)

The extended cut is coming on a German blu-ray from Koch Media:

It is listed as an extra though, so it's hard to say if the image quality will be the same as when it was the main feature. I'm gonna wait for reviews first, but I'm inclined to pick it up as I've never seen the three hour version.
Has anyone seen the three hour version? It is quite a long book (although it didn't feel long when reading at all), so there should be enough to fill an extra hour. It's never been of my major favourites, but I do like it. And Max von Sydow is one of my favourite actors.

It seems the three hour version was made for tv only.

Looks like the blu-ray release from Koch is coming at the end of November. Usually reviews only come out once it's been released.

For whatever reason they keep delaying the release of the blu-ray from Koch. It should be out now, but they moved it to January 16.
My main interest is the longer cut for American tv. I have no idea if it's an improvement over the theatrical cut, but it's a fairly long book and it may be better served by a longer running time.
But I think no one here has seen the longer cut?

They haven't moved the release date again, so it should be available in two days. It looks like the longer tv-version is included on a bonus DVD, so it won't be blu-ray quality. That is okay with me, as long as it's not too bad in quality of course. Hope reviews come soon.

They put out a lot of these mediabooks in Germany. They're quite nice, but the writing is in German of course. I just got one of the Suspiria remake, which held up great to a second viewing, and which I can honestly say I love about as much now as the original.

You guys get all the good stuff!! There's even a deluxe edition of Sign 'O' The Times that we can't even get here in the States.

I feel exactly the same about region A releases. Often there seem to be much better and more expansive editions of films in region A. I suppose the truth lies in the middle: some great releases are only in region A and some are only in region B.

I have no idea where to get the deluxe Sign o/t Times. I saw it reviewed on Youtube, but it didn't interest me too greatly, because what it mainly seems to be is a lot of interviews, not extra music in some way or form, like maybe a different or longer cut of the film (it always felt short to me).
Maybe it's interesting though, hard to tell.

I'd like to see/hear the interviews. I should look on youtube. Rumor has it that there are deleted songs from the film.

It's a limited deluxe for the German market. You can get it here, but I'm not gonna do that at this price, because you just never can tell if they're gonna package it well or not. I don't feel like risking that. My physical store here in town doesn't seem to have it, but I could ask them for it. Not sure if it's worth it though, I'm not so interested in mainly interviews.

There is also a cheaper mediabook edition at about half the price.

Yes, the German Needful Things mediabook you can officially buy now! I'm awaiting reviews, but unless they're overly negative I feel like buying it soon. Not sure why I'm so curious about the extra hour, but somehow I am. Also haven't seen the film in ages, don't even remember whether it's ever been on tv here.
