Where to start and what order in which to read Stephen King's books?

IT is a great starter, really shows his kinship writing at it's best. What about some of his collections of shorter tales. I do agree, leave the DT series till a little later. Whilst others said they were pleased to read them before, THEN read others not in the series, I took enormous pleasure from reading most everything THEN reading the DT series. It left me shaking my head in wonder thinking "WOW.... SO many links into everything I read!!"

I find myself currently in the "what should I read next" situation, as after having been a Constant Reader up until Needful Things, I've only recently re-discovered Stephen King having read Under The Dome Joyland, 11/22/63 (my favourite of this recent batch) and Duma Key and I have, well, fallen in love again!

So, where to next? I've got a big gap from Gerald's Game up to Duma Key to contemplate and I'm not sure how to proceed.

All opinions welcome!

Why not just begin where you left off and continue? Have you taken the Dark Tower journey? I would. You know what's strange, say like over at "the Library" at stephen king dot com, I looked at the novels, right...and you can click on something to make them line up chronologically? Well...Hearts isn't there! Heh! I...or wait now. Oh okay, that's on the story list. Just a sec. Well yeah I'm back. That's a long damn list. Grab one and go with it. You can't miss. I liked them all.

Welcome! I would just go chronologically.

Why did you stop? Did you stop liking his writing or just happen to grow away from him? Alot of "occasional" King fans seem to say he had a dip in form in the 90's - I couldn't say because all I have read from that period was The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and I liked it. If you stopped liking him, then maybe the Green Mile might be a good place to start - that is pretty much accepted by most fans as a winner. Or finnish (or even restart if you feel the need to) the Dark Towers. Then just pick and choose from the ones you missed out on at random. I am reading them at random and I am enjoying it.

Wow - are you a long lost relative, cuz you sound just like me! I also somehow got away from Sai King and his universe but in my case, life just got in the way! I had career, marriage, child rearing, etc. going on and somehow just missed so many of his books!

When I read 11/22/63 I then went on to Under the Dome, Duma Key, etc.
Have you read "Hearts in Atlantis" - that is a great one!

Oh God, there are SO many - like Walter says, go look at "The Library" on this web site and just choose them at random.

Happy reading and Welcome to the SKMB!

If I could have my time over again,
1) I'd start at the beginning, and
2) Read them chronologically, leaving the DT series for last.

Thanks for your ideas, everyone.

I can't quite remember exactly why I stopped being a Constant Reader back in the early nineties, but I like the idea of picking up where I left off and bringing myself up to date, chronologically (this also fits in with my recent reading to reading Stephen King which, from Joyland, has been chronologically backwards!).

This approach also delays reading Lisey's Story, which, having read around a few message boards, may not be a bad thing given the general lack of love for this book?!

Lisey's Story does not follow a lineal timeline...which I suspect is one reason why some readers fail to appreciate the story therein. But I read the hell out of it, three four five times maybe six. I loved the story. I had to go back a page or two a time or two but all in all it knocked my socks off.
