Coincidence?
  • Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F Kennedy in 1946.
  • Lincoln was elected president in 1860; Kennedy in 1960.
  • Both Presidents were into civil rights; both of their wives lost children while serving at the White House.
  • Both Presidents after their deaths were succeeded by Southerners by the surname of "Johnson": Andrew Johnson was born in 1808; Lyndon B. in 1908.
  • Lincoln and Kennedy died on a Friday. They both were killed by wounding of the head while in the presence of their wives.
  • Both of the alleged assassins were killed before their trials.
  • John Wilkes Booth was born in 1839; Oswald in 1939.
  • Lincoln's secretary was named 'Kennedy'; Kennedy's secretary was named 'Lincoln'.
  • Booth ran from a theater and was captured in a warehouse; Oswald ran from a warehouse and was captured in a theater.

Interesting, but can they both be connected to Kevin Bacon?

I was 16 and in high school. I recall exactly when I got the news. I was walking between classes with a friend and laughing and having a good ole time. I heard about his death and didn't blink an eye because I was young and naive and had no idea at the time what the impact of his death meant. Heck, I had no idea what was going on in the world at the time. I was just enjoying being young... something that went away for many young people in the few years after his death because of the Viet Nam war. I find this book very interesting. I have read it and listened to the Audible version.

I was 7 years old, and sharing a bedroom with my older sister. We lived in Canberra (Australia). She had been listening to her crystal radio set (anyone else remember those?) and woke me at 6.00am to tell me that President Kennedy had been shot. I didn't believe her, thought that she had found yet another topic to tease me about, but when we went out to the kitchen for breakfast, it was on the radio news. I remember being very upset, and wondering what would happen to the world now. Even at the age of 7, we were aware of politics, and the rest of the world - comes of growing up in a city where almost everyone worked for government departments, and a lot of the kids we went to school with came from the diplomatic community.
As for conspiracy theories and who "really did it".......
The best I have read is in a book by Tom Robbins where he talks about the Dallas Police, and their epic failure in protecting Oswald, and Jack Ruby for that matter. Says nothing about alternative assassinators, but is most enlightening on the subject of policing. I still giggle whenever I hear the expression "the Dallas Police".
Now, about this book....
I have only read it twice so far, and found it compelling, however, I would be really interested for SK to go further into his "what if" imagination, and expand more on what the current and intervening years would have been like had President Kennedy not been killed.
Is there any more of that in there Mr King?

All I remember is the front of the newspapers when Elvis Presley past away. Because I watched all his movies and knew his songs I knew who he was. That, and when John Lennon died. All the baby boomers seem to know where they were when John Lennon died. I was at school and Mr. McLaughlin told us. I think. He gave me a good comment when I was the only one in class that knew what happened in 1908 in Siberia.
Me as well. Elvis was my Kennedy.

My Kennedy was a guy named Olof Palme. He was shot and killed when walking home from a cinema visit with his wife in 1986. He was the swedish primeminister at the time and had held that position since the end of the sixties through many elections. I didn't always agree with him but he was a politician i respected and those are, for me at least, very few. His murderer was never found. He was seen running away from his kill but who he was is unknown.

I don't remember the day he was killed but I do remember watching the funeral procession on television with my Mom while she cried. She 'lost' it when young John Jr. took a step forward and saluted the casket as it rolled past. I didn't really get what was happening but was concerned about why my Mom was crying.

9th grade for me, social studies, first class after lunch. The teacher was very distraught, tearful, as he gave us the news. The surreal part was walking home. We had to go through downtown, about 2:00 I guess, and it was a ghost town. Stores closed, no traffic, almost scary.
